Job summary

Southlake Health in Newmarket, Ontario, is seeking a Supervised Practice Intern for the SPE Partnership to model clinical excellence, provide patient care within the scope of practice, and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure safe, effective care.

The role requires completion of a nursing education program for RN or RPN, recent nursing practice, and successful completion of the registration and jurisprudence exams.

About the role:

The Supervised Practice Experience (SPE) Partnership is a partnership program between the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Ontario Health and CNO approved organizations such as Southlake Regional Health Centre.

The Supervised Practice Intern in a supervised practice experience role, models clinical excellence and the core competencies of the practice standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), as well as the policies and procedures of Southlake Health.

The Supervised Practice Intern works collaboratively as a member of the health care team. The IEN provides direct patient care to patients based on the three-factor framework as outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario standard, RN and RPN Practice: The Client, Nurse and the Environment. These three factors have an impact on decision making related to care-provider assignment as well as the need for consultation and collaboration among care providers.

What you'll be doing:
  • Provide patient and family focused care within the Supervised Practice Intern scope of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Function in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
  • Ensure that practice is consistent with entry to practice competencies, standards of practice, guidelines and legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Practice collaboratively with members of the healthcare team to provide elements of care for patients/clients with complex health issues.
  • Practice collaboratively with other members of the inter-professional health care team.
  • Contribute to the assessment and documentation of each patient's health status on an ongoing basis.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Plan of Care and evaluates its ongoing effectiveness.
  • Effectively utilizes human and material resources.
  • Refrain from using the protected title, “RN” or “RPN”. These titles are restricted to CNO registered members.
  • Clearly explain to others, including clients, the capacity in which you are practicing. For example, stating, “I’m am a CNO applicant, applying to register as a XXXX. I’m completing a supervised practice experience as part of my requirements to enter the nursing profession under the supervision of a qualified supervisor.”
  • Only provide care you are competent to provide.
  • Will not supervise, monitor, or direct the performance of others, with no exceptions.
  • Will not delegate a controlled act.
What you'll bring:
  • Must demonstrate the successful completion of a nursing education program designed to prepare you for the type of nursing (RN or RPN) that you want to practice in Ontario.
  • Have recent experience practicing as a nurse.
  • Successfully complete the registration examination approved by the College for the type of nursing (RN or RPN) you want to practice.
  • Successfully complete the RN/RPN Jurisprudence Examination.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in either English or French.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or hold authorization under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) to engage in the practice of nursing in Ontario.
  • Demonstrates conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrates computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated problem assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated individual leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
