Job summary

Teck Resources Limited’s Highland Valley Copper in British Columbia seeks a Senior Superintendent, Mine Operations to lead drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and pit development, ensuring safe, reliable execution of the mine plan.

You will manage a team of Supervisors and frontline leaders, drive safety leadership, operational discipline and continuous improvement across an expanding autonomous haulage fleet from 125Mt to 225Mt per year.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 to 15 years of progressive open pit mining experience.
  • Proven leadership experience managing large operational teams.
  • Strong safety, production and continuous improvement track record.
  • Knowledge of BC mining regulations and practices.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience in autonomous/automated mining environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety-centered leadership for project delivery and team development.

About Highland Valley Copper

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operationsis Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Superintendent, Mine Operations is a senior operational leader serving as the department head of mine operations responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable execution of the mine plan. Through a team of General Supervisors, Senior Supervisors, and frontline leaders, you will lead mining operations across drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, pit development, mine services, training, and projects. The mine is currently in an expansion phase, scaling its current autonomous haulage fleet across the operation and increasing capacity from 125Mt per annum to 225Mt, becoming one of the largest autonomous haulage sites and copper mines globally.

This role plays a critical part in delivering production commitments while building a high-performance culture focused on safety, accountability, operational discipline, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate closely with Integrated Planning, Mine Maintenance, Mill Operations, and a variety of supporting groups to optimize performance and ensure alignment between strategic priorities and field execution.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Leadership Excellence:

  • Serve as a courageous safety leader and visible role model for Teck's safety values and expectations.
  • Champion a culture where safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence are integrated into daily decision-making.
  • Lead, coach, and develop General Supervisors, Senior Supervisors, Mine Supervisors, and operational teams to achieve exceptional performance.
  • Build leadership capability through mentorship, succession planning, performance management, and employee development.
  • Foster a workplace culture built on accountability, teamwork, inclusion, and continuous learning.

Operational Leadership:

  • Provide overall leadership for the safe execution of short, medium, and long-range mine plans.
  • Ensure effective coordination of personnel, equipment, and operational priorities to achieve production and quality targets.
  • Maintain alignment between mine planning activities and field execution.
  • Drive operational discipline and consistency across all shifts and work groups.
  • Monitor key operational metrics and implement strategies to improve productivity, utilization, equipment effectiveness, and plan compliance.
  • Ensure adequate mine services, pit infrastructure, dewatering, and operational support activities are in place to enable achievement of the mine plan

Strategic Planning & Business Performance.:

  • Development and execution of annual operating plans, budgets, forecasts, and business objectives.
  • Ensure an effective hourly and management hiring and training program meets the business needs
  • Capital planning and execution for all mine operations equipment and infrastructure to meet the mine plan
  • Analyze operational performance and identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that advance operational excellence and sustainable performance improvements.
  • Support the evaluation and implementation of emerging mining technologies, automation systems, and innovative work practices.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner closely with Mine Maintenance, Technical Services, Integrated Planning, Operations Centre, Mill Operations, Human Resources, and Health & Safety teams.
  • Support integrated decision-making to optimize mine-to-mill performance.
  • Develop strong working relationships across departments to ensure effective communication, alignment, and execution.
  • Collaborate with union leadership and employees to maintain productive labour relations and a positive working environment.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 to 15 years of progressive open pit mining experience, including significant operational leadership responsibilities.
  • Proven leadership experience managing large operational teams through multiple levels of supervision.
  • Demonstrated success delivering results in safety, production, workforce engagement, and operational improvement.
  • Strong understanding of mine operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, mine services, and pit development.
  • Knowledge of British Columbia mining regulations and industry best practices.
  • Exceptional leadership, coaching, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong analytical, planning, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

Assets:

  • Experience operating in highly automated or autonomous mining environments.
  • Experience leading large-scale operational improvement or transformational initiatives.
  • Experience working within a unionized environment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
  • Familiarity with fleet management, dispatch, and operational performance systems

Pay Range: CAD $164,000 - $202,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions:

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
