Job Description

An opportunity exists for a Summer Student P&C Telecom System Technologist in the Field Operations team based at our Acheson office. Reporting to the Manager, P&C Telecom North, this position will be part of a multi‑disciplinary team responsible for the operation and maintenance of the AltaLink Transmission system with a focus on the Telecommunications system and Protection & Control equipment. The successful candidate will be required to follow all AltaLink work methods, policies and procedures and will be expected to reside in the greater Edmonton area. The start date is May 2026 and the length of the term is 4 months.

Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, and maintain Protection & Control and Telecommunication devices associated with AltaLink’s transmission system.
  • Interact constructively with Field Operations, Maintenance Planning & Scheduling, System Operations, and other departments within AltaLink.
  • Develop Field Level Hazard Assessments/ Safe Work Plans, perform P&C Telecommunications work safely and ensure a high level of reliability to our customers.
  • Trouble response for Protection & Control and Telecommunication equipment in the area.
  • Assist and support other disciplines as required.

Qualifications
  • Full‑time student enrolled in a related and recognized two‑year Electrical, Wireless, Telecom, or Electronics Engineering Technology program.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.
  • Knowledge and adherence to safety practices, procedures, and standards required.
  • Be competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to build rapport.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Drivers abstract to be provided upon interview.
  • Capable of passing the physical fitness and medical requirements.
  • Able to work alone with a minimum of supervision and respond to after hours trouble calls.
  • Willing to accept out of town working conditions.
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and punctuality.
