Job description

Job Title: Electrical Equipment Support Engineer

Overview

This position is needed to help with an increasing workload in capital projects, emergency replacement and restoration work, asset management strategic OMA work programs and Owner’s Engineer review work. As Electrical Equipment Support Engineer, you have specialized knowledge of electrical power equipment. Ideally, you would have some experience with the specification and installation of substation electrical equipment.

You will be required to have experience with the design of electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 2.4 kV to 550 kV and demonstrated experience working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment.

We will need engineers with knowledge in air‑insulated substation switchgear and reactive equipment to support their replacement programs. You would have extensive reactive equipment and bushing replacement experience to support our client’s ongoing transformer bushing replacement program.

Responsibilities
  • Review system requirements and select suitable equipment.
  • Conduct site visits and complete site reports.
  • Complete material requests for new equipment.
  • Complete drawings reviews for new equipment.
  • Provide engineering support during install work.
  • Review test results from pre‑ and post‑testing work.
  • Review field delegation report to check work is done satisfactorily.
  • Signing off on TRCS for safe energization.
  • Outline any deficiencies.
  • Share information amongst team in particular any lessons learned.
  • Experience in one or both of the reactive or switchgear equipment areas is required.
  • Key aspects of the reactive equipment area include: series capacitor stations, STATCOMS, power transformers, shunt reactors, instrument transformers.
  • Key aspects of the switchgear equipment area include: HV circuit breakers up to 550 kV, HV & MV GIS, metal‑clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect switches, fused cutouts, station service switchgear, station surge arrester.
Experience and Qualifications
  • University graduate in applied science or engineering.
  • 8+ years of related experience (will consider less experience for strong Int engineer).
  • Registered (Permit to Practice) Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) BC or transferable.
  • Must have experience with medium voltage (2.4 kV to 550 kV) substation reactive or switchgear equipment.
  • Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software.
  • Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers.
  • Ability to manage design tasks including scope, schedule and cost.
  • Ability to find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in the English language, analytical, interpersonal communications and presentation skills.
  • Experience in project management including estimating, cost control and project administration.

Term: Initial 1‑year contract, likely to extend based on workload and performance.
