Job summary

NETES is a not-for-profit Indigenous organization in Winnipeg providing education, wellness and employment services to support Indigenous learners.

The Student Support Liaison role focuses on promoting wellness, removing barriers to success, and guiding students toward their Mature Grade 12 Diploma while fostering a respectful, culturally connected learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Education or Human Services or related field.
  • An equivalent combination of lived experience, community work, education, and training may be considered.
  • Certification or training in Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, or related support training is considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed support, guidance and advocacy to students.
  • Conduct student follow-ups, wellness check-ins, and referrals to appropriate internal and external support services.
  • Support students in overcoming barriers related to education, attendance, housing, wellness, transportation and personal challenges.
  • Provide crisis intervention support and connect students to appropriate community agencies and wellness services.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive and culturally respectful learning environment rooted in Indigenous values and community connections.
  • Collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to support student success and retention.
  • Support student engagement through workshops, presentations, wellness initiatives, and campus activities.
  • Assist students with educational planning, funding applications, bursaries, and community resource navigation.
  • Assist with student recruitment, orientation and transition planning as required.
  • Other duties as required.

The Student Support Liaison plays a key role in promoting student wellness, personal growth, and educational success by providing compassionate, holistic support to learners experiencing academic, personal, social, financial, or emotional challenges. Through advocacy, guidance, referrals, crisis intervention, and wellness-focused supports, the Student Support Liaison helps students identify and overcome barriers that may impact their ability to succeed in their studies.

Working collaboratively with students, staff, and community partners, the Student Support Liaison fosters a supportive and culturally respectful environment that encourages resilience, self-confidence, healthy decision-making, and self-sufficiency. The successful candidate will be committed to empowering students to achieve their educational goals while supporting their overall well-being and personal development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experience working with Indigenous students or community support programs.
  • Experience supporting individuals facing educational, personal or social barriers.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and culturally diverse environments.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention, advocacy, or referrals to support services.
Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of trauma-informed, student-centred, and culturally responsive approaches to support services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create positive, respectful relationships with students and community partners.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in crises using sound judgement and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of community resources and support services.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office and general computer applications.
  • Ability to perform computer and administrative work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to travel in the community as required.

NETES requires a clear and satisfactory Criminal Record Check before employment begins. All checks must be dated within three (3) months of the start date.
