Position Information

Job Title: Student Research Assistant

Employment Status: Full Time, Fixed Term

Summary: Under the direction of the Director, CNC Research Forest, or designate, this position provides basic assistance to CNC research faculty and staff involved in Research Forest operations or various CNC applied research projects. The incumbent will apply skills from post-secondary studies, training certifications, or on-the-job training.

Responsibilities
  • Digital data collection, primarily from research installations.
  • Under the direction of experienced researchers, clean, sort, correct, stratify, and analyze research information.
  • Install and maintain research equipment; assemble monitoring equipment within office and outdoor sites.
  • Safely operate tools and equipment related to assigned research projects.
  • Safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials (indoor lab).
  • Recognize and respond to safety hazards; report safety incidents and suggest improvements to health and safety.
  • Collaborate with other Student Research Assistants and researchers to undertake measurements and assessments of samples.
  • Assist with assessments of research sites where trained; administer research surveys under guidance.
  • Research available information related to assigned topics; assist with literature reviews and market research as assigned.
  • Maintenance and operation of basic research equipment; assist supervisor in organizing field activities.
  • Collect information to support development of research documents and data for supervision of field projects; collect, store, and assess project-related samples.
  • Enter field data into spreadsheets and databases; perform quality checks on data.
  • Contribute to safe and engaging student learning and research activities in labs and outdoor sites; assist with demonstrations.
  • Promote a positive work atmosphere with professional communication and mutual respect.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
  • High School completion plus additional advanced courses; currently a student in good standing at a post-secondary institution.
  • Preference for completed certified training or post-secondary studies related to the CNC research project.
  • Less than 6 months volunteering or working in an industry related to the CNC project.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive team environment; professional verbal and written communication.
  • Class 5 or higher driver’s license preferred; “N” status acceptable with driver’s abstract.
  • Basic First Aid or willingness to obtain.
  • Proficient with MS Outlook, Word, and Excel; willing to train on equipment related to the CNC project.
  • Physical ability to meet job demands; familiarity with equipment, instruments, and tools as needed.
  • CNC Forest Research specific skills: operate motorized vehicles on rough roads; identify vegetation to species level; use map, compass, and GPS; knowledge of safe work practices; familiarity with BC Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification system.
