The position focuses on providing first-line GIS and application support, creating maps, updating core GIS datasets, and developing web maps and applications to support organizational needs.

The ideal candidate is enrolled in Civil Engineering, Geography, GIS, Geomatics or related field, with experience in ArcGIS tools and Python.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Geography, GIS, Geomatics or closely related field.
  • 0-3 years related GIS experience and ESRI GIS software knowledge.
  • Experience editing and maintaining spatial data is preferred; versioned editing is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Be the first point of contact for GIS updates and queries via phone and email.
  • Troubleshoot basic GIS issues, including map updates, remotely and in-person.
  • Follow and update GIS process documentation; create new docs with IT staff to ensure consistency.
  • Receive, log, and manage project and asset updates from internal Engineering via email and Teams.

The Opportunity (Vacancy: Replacement)
Recruiting for the Winter & Spring 2027 term (January 2027 – August 2027)

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Data and Applications, this student role is responsible for providing first‑line GIS and application support to internal staff. Key responsibilities include creating maps, updating and maintaining core GIS datasets, and developing web maps and applications to support organizational needs.

As the Student, Engineering GIS you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Act as the first point of contact for phone calls and emails for Engineering staff regarding GIS updates and queries
  • Troubleshoot basic GIS related problems, including map updates, both remotely and in-person
  • Follow and update existing documentation of GIS processes related to Engineering related projects, as well as create new documentation where none currently exists in collaboration with other IT staff to enable consistent results
  • Receiving, logging and managing project and asset updates from internal Engineering via email and Teams
The Ideal Candidate

We are seekingan enthusiastic student who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Geography, GIS, Geomatics or closely related field. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of 0-3 years related experience with GIS tools and technologies, and ESRI GIS software products. We are seeking a student with experience in editing and maintaining spatial data; experience with versioned editing considered an asset. The ideal candidate has experience with the following: ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, ArcGIS Collector, ArcGIS Server, FME, ArcSDE, Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, Geocortex, and Python.

The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in civil infrastructure or water resource management and proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). We are seeking an individual with superior interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment, a demonstrated ability to make decisions involving routine tasks within established procedures, and excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to give, obtain and/or exchange routine information.

This position offers a rate of pay of $21.18-$26.48 per hour, based on a 35-hour work week.

Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
