Position: Student Assistant, Indigenous Student Services – Coquitlam Campus
Salary: $18.42 per hour
Hours: Minimum 10 hours/week up to a maximum of 20 hours/week.
Work Terms:
- Fall 2025: September 2 – December 15, 2025
- Winter 2026: January 5 – April 24, 2026
- Summer 2026: May 4 – August 16, 2026

What It Takes
The Indigenous Student Services (ISS) Student Assistants support the ISS team in day‑to‑day operations, programming, and student outreach. They serve as role models and peer mentors within the Indigenous student community.
Responsibilities
- Participate in training workshops, including peer helping, suicide awareness, effective communication, Indigenous cultural protocols, and FoodSafe.
- Provide peer‑to‑peer support to Indigenous students through active listening and referral to appropriate college and community resources.
- Maintain the Indigenous student lounge, including tidying, organizing supplies and equipment, tracking participation, and performing cleaning and administrative tasks.
- Coordinate projects and events that enhance Indigenous student orientation, transition, and engagement (e.g., wellness programs, cultural activities, recreational events).
- Support food security initiatives by cooking during Community Kitchen, prepping sandwich fixings, co‑facilitating cooking workshops, and coordinating the food pantry.
- Welcome guests to the Indigenous Gathering Place and provide support during events, sharing information about the space.
- Create posters and promotional materials using Canva and similar tools.
- Assist College Elders during events by ensuring they are attended to.
- Assist with the Indigenous Community Garden during the summer semester (watering, weeding, harvesting).
- Participate in community events with Indigenous partners.
- Present to prospective Indigenous students.
- Attend regular ISS team meetings and provide student input on programming and needs.
- Represent ISS in college‑wide committees and consultations.
To Be Successful in This Role You Will Need
- Self‑identified Indigenous student (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).
- At least one previous semester at Douglas College.
- Good academic standing (not on academic probation).
Domestic students must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible:
- Enroll in and maintain a minimum of three credit courses at Douglas College throughout the work term.
- Have completed at least three credit courses in the term immediately preceding the work term and intend to enroll again in the following term.
- Enroll in and maintain a minimum of six credit courses at another accredited public post‑secondary institution in BC throughout the work term.
- Have completed at least six credit courses in the term immediately preceding the work term and intend to enroll again in the following term.
International students must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible:
- Enroll in full‑time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
- Hold a valid study permit that allows off‑campus employment, with proof of full‑time enrollment from another accredited public post‑secondary institution in BC.
Qualified Douglas College students meeting these criteria will receive first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
