Job summary

Stantec seeks a Structural Engineer to join the Energy and Resources team in Canada. The role includes leading design of heavy industrial mining and energy structures, collaborating across multidisciplinary teams, and growing technical expertise in a dynamic environment.

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Professional Engineer with 12–15 years of experience, strong knowledge of structural codes, and willingness to travel to project sites. Hybrid work with 2 days in-office is offered.

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer in at least one Canadian province.
  • 12 to 15 years of structural engineering experience in industrial infrastructure.
  • Experience with mining surface/underground structures.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply Stantec safety culture and health and safety guidelines.
  • Perform structural design and analysis for heavy industrial mining and energy structures.
  • Develop designs via sketches, calculations, and software models.
  • Collaborate with Engineers and Designers to meet client needs.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and project management to follow project plans.
  • Mentor EITs and designers, supporting professional development.
  • Conduct QA/QC on own projects per guidelines.
  • Prepare project specifications and construction documents.
  • Attend project coordination meetings with team and clients.
  • Travel to local project sites as needed.

Your Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Structural Engineer to join the Energy and Resources team. The successful candidate would have opportunities to work on a variety of projects within the Energy and Resource sector ranging from studies to detail engineering projects in North America and across the world. This role would provide an opportunity to be a part of a diverse team while focusing on technical growth. Specifically, we are looking for a candidate that can perform and lead work related to design of Mining and other heavy industrial infrastructure.

This is a great opportunity for a motivated individual who wants to challenge their abilities in a dynamic work environment. As a registered Professional Engineer, you will be responsible to work on various industrial projects. This role involves structural engineering design and analysis under minimal supervision. You would be relied on to make sound structural engineering decisions, and to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • You are expected to understand and work according to the requirements of the Stantec Safety Culture and in compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Stantec and its clients.
  • Perform structural design and analysis to applicable codes. Typical structures include heavy industrial mining and energy steel structures and concrete foundations.
  • Develop designs through sketches, hand calculations, structural analysis software models
  • Work with Engineers and Designers on fit-for-purpose designs that meet the client’s needs and requests.
  • Interface with other disciplines and project management to execute projects per the project plan.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to EITs and designers as part of their professional development, while taking an active role in your own career development.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects within Stantec's quality control guidelines.
  • Prepare and coordinate project specifications including construction documents.
  • Attend project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or clients.
  • Travel to local project sites as needed.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
As The Ideal Candidate, You Have/are
  • Registered P. Eng. In Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan or BC with the ability to get registered in additional provinces.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and time management skills.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently.
  • Ability to apply practical knowledge and make sound judgement to analyze issues, interpret information and select methods and solutions to resolve design problems within stand practice guidelines. Requisite knowledge and application of structural design codes (NBC, CSA, CISC, ACI, AISC, etc.). Knowledge of specific codes and standards related to Hoisting and Underground infrastructure is an asset.
  • Skills to manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Experience in project team setting and engaging in creative and critical thinking.
  • Enthusiastic to expand structural engineering knowledge and keen to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work on multiple jobs/projects at a time.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry standard structural analysis software suites, specifically STAAD.Pro and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of mathematical computational tools such as MathCad and the ability to perform detailed structural calculations within this environment.
  • Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working or projects related to mining surface and/or underground infrastructure. Typical types of structures include headframes, process facilities material handling structures, collar and hoist houses, pump stations, etc.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites and other Stantec offices.
  • Field experience is a strong asset.
  • Experience with US codes and projects is a strong asset along with the ability to be licensed in the US.
Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural.
  • A Master's degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural is preferred.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in at least one province with 12 to15 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on industrial infrastructure.

This position offers flexibility for hybrid work with a minimum of 2 days a week in the local office.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range
  • Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC & Various locations in Ontario-$105,400.00 - $158,100.00 Annually
  • Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$111,700.00 - $167,600.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
