Job summary

Jacobs in Ontario, Canada seeks a Power Systems Engineer – Strategic Projects to lead HV substations, transmission projects, and grid modernization efforts. The role involves collaboration with engineering, operations, and leadership teams to deliver strategic infrastructure investments.

You will conduct technical analyses, develop design criteria, and guide projects through planning, design, construction, and commissioning, ensuring reliability and safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited institution.
• 12+ years of utility, transmission, substation, or power systems engineering experience.
• Experience with high-voltage systems from 69kV through 500kV.
• Knowledge of substation equipment including transformers, breakers, disconnects, CTs, protection & control, and bus forms.
• Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility design practices.
• Strong analytical and written/verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects on substations, transmission, protection and control, and grid infrastructure.
• Perform engineering studies, evaluations, and system assessments.
• Develop scopes, specifications, design criteria, and engineering recommendations.
• Support conceptual to detailed design activities.
• Coordinate lifecycle phases: planning, design, construction, commissioning, closeout.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and implementation strategies.
• Support modernization efforts: substation automation, digital substations, SCADA, grid resiliency, asset management, renewables, storage.
• Conduct benchmarking and technical due diligence for strategic investments.
• Guide system studies: load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, loading, reliability, power quality.
• Analyze equipment performance and failure trends; propose reliability improvements.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Energy/Power teams and external stakeholders; present findings; assist budgeting.
