Job summary

BMO Financial Group seeks a Senior Counsel to provide and manage legal advisory services for Treasury and Payments Solutions. You will guide strategy, assess regulatory impacts, and work with senior leaders to minimize risk while enabling business initiatives.

Role demands extensive legal practice, deep regulatory knowledge, and the ability to collaborate across groups, influence decisions, and manage ambiguity in a complex financial services environment.

Qualifications

• Typically 7 years of legal practice or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Degree in law (LLB or JD) and license to practice law in relevant jurisdiction.
• Knowledge of business and regulatory environment in which BMO operates.
• Advanced knowledge of subject matter legal requirements and operations of a single client group.
• Seasoned professional with education, experience and industry knowledge.
• Analytical and problem solving skills – In-depth / Expert.
• Influence skills – In-depth / Expert.
• Collaboration & team skills; with cross-group collaboration – In-depth / Expert.
• Able to manage ambiguity.

Responsibilities

• Provides and manages the delivery of legal and regulatory advice on products, initiatives, strategies, policies and developments for and on behalf of BMO Financial Group.
• Influences and negotiates to achieve business objectives while minimizing legal risk.
• Makes recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives.
• Acts as the prime subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders.
• Delivers legal advice, instructs external counsel and ensures compliance with internal policies and procedures for a single or small number of function(s).
• Resolves daily issues and risks and implements appropriate actions to mitigate them.
• Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.
