Job description

Historic Environment Scotland is recruiting a part time Steward to work across Elgin Cathedral and Spynie Palace.

This is a seasonal, part year permanent role offering a unique opportunity to work within Scotland’s historic environment, welcoming visitors from around the world and helping bring local history to life.

The role is expected to start on 1 April 2026 and will run until 30 September 2026.

The role
  • Working as part of a site team, you will welcome visitors and deliver high standards of customer service across both locations.
  • You will assist visitors with information, admissions, and retail transactions, helping ensure they have an engaging and enjoyable experience.
  • You will help maintain presentation standards across public and staff areas, following cleaning and safety procedures.
  • You will support guided tours, talks, events, and community engagement activity.
  • You will work closely with colleagues to meet visitor experience and commercial performance targets.
  • You may assist with stock management, site security, and act as a key holder where required.
  • Health and safety of visitors, staff, and contractors will always be a priority.
What we are looking for
  • Experience delivering high standards of customer service.
  • Strong team working skills, with the ability to work independently when required.

  • Basic IT skills and confidence using online systems.
Contract and pay
  • Part year permanent, seasonal role.
  • 35 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 including weekends.
  • Starting salary £25,770 per annum, pro rata.
  • Grade 1.
  • Location Elgin Cathedral, IV30 1HU and Spynie Palace, IV30 5QG.

Interviews will be held in person at Elgin Cathedral during the week commencing 26 January 2026.
