Accountabilities
  • Operate a variety of complex processes and utilities equipment in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Support steel production through utilities services including: electricity, steam, mill water, compressed air, nitrogen, oxygen and wastewater.
  • Operate high‑pressure steam equipment and auxiliaries within the steelworks safely and efficiently.
  • React appropriately to operational changes in a timely manner.
  • Working hands‑on in a control room or in field monitoring operations, overseeing complex and varying processes.
  • Support steel and energy production in accordance with the TSSA Operating Engineer’s Act and with Algoma’s policies and procedures.
  • Operate environmental control equipment to assist in meeting emission requirements.
  • Problem‑solve process changes to ensure safe and stable operations.
  • Perform equipment shutdowns, isolations, lockouts, confined spaces and repairs on a variety of equipment.
  • Regular safety training and adherence to Algoma’s health and safety programs.
  • Potential for physically demanding work, in outdoor and indoor temperature settings.
  • Participate in equipment maintenance to ensure reliable plant operations.
Requirements
  • Operating Engineers certificate, in good standing order, with the TSSA. 4th class, 3rd class, and 2nd class certifications.
  • Post‑secondary degree / diploma in a related discipline considered an asset.
  • Operational and maintenance experience with boilers, steam turbines, gas turbines, steam auxiliaries, environmental equipment, HVAC and compressed air systems.
  • Supervisory experience considered an asset.
  • Ability to work 12‑hour shift work, nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work alone or as a team and communicate openly about operational challenges, changes, requirements or improvements.
