Job summary

SYSTRA Canada, part of the SYSTRA group, is seeking a Station Design Manager to lead multidisciplinary rail station design from concept to IFC, across all project stages, ensuring objectives, regulatory compliance and lifecycle performance.

You will coordinate architecture, structural, MEP, rail systems and interfaces, manage governance, risk, cost and schedule, and collaborate with authorities, operators, and clients within a hybrid work model.

Qualifications

• Accredited degree in Architecture, Building Engineering, or related discipline.
• Professional Engineer or eligibility to obtain; Registered Architect or eligibility to obtain considered an asset.
• Minimum 15–20 years of experience in major infrastructure or transportation projects, including 10+ years in multidisciplinary station design leadership.
• Experience on rail or metro projects, preferably high-speed rail or large transit hubs.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams in regulated environments.

Context

The Station Design Manager will lead and coordinate the multidisciplinary design of rail stations and associated facilities across all project stages. The Station Design Manager is responsible for ensuring that station designs meet project objectives, operational requirements, passenger experience standards, regulatory frameworks, constructability constraints, and lifecycle performance targets. This role entails technical coordination across architecture, structural, MEP, utilities, fire/life safety, vertical transportation, civil interfaces, and rail systems. The Station Design Manager will act as the design coordination lead for station packages within projects.

Missions/Main Duties

Management and Team Governance

• Design Leadership and Governance
• Coordinate the multidisciplinary design development of rail stations and station-related facilities from concept to IFC stage.
• Ensure alignment of station design Objectives as identified during the design co-development.
• Maintain the Station Development Plan, including: Design milestones, Deliverable matrices, Interface registers, Risk registers, Design review checkpoints
• Establish and enforce technical governance processes, including: Design reviews (30/60/90/IFC), Change control procedures, Configuration management, Decision traceability and design maturity gates.
• Ensure compliance with Project Requirements Specifications (PRS), technical standards, and applicable Canadian codes and regulations.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance to discipline leads and consultant teams as required.
• Interface Management
• Manage interfaces between station design and: Track alignment and rail systems (OCS, signalling, telecoms); Civil works and guideway structures; Utilities relocation and integration; Traction power and substations; Operations and maintenance facilities; Third-party developments and municipal infrastructure.
• Ensure station design requirements are clearly communicated to rail systems, civil, and infrastructure teams.
• Coordinate closely with: System Engineering stream, Digital engineering / BIM team, Asset management and digital twin representatives, Future operator and maintainer.
• Develop and maintain an Interface Management Plan for each station package.
• Regulatory and Authority Coordination
• Liaise with federal, provincial, and municipal authorities to support: Building permits; Fire marshal approvals; Environmental approvals; Accessibility compliance; Transport Canada coordination (where applicable); Utility provider coordination as required
• Ensure alignment with codes and standards.
• Support environmental assessment processes and community consultations.
• Passenger Experience and Operations Integration
• Ensure station layouts support: Efficient passenger circulation; Safe platform operations; Emergency egress compliance; Wayfinding and intuitive navigation; Security screening (if applicable); Retail and commercial integration; Multimodal connectivity (bus, metro, parking, active transport)
• Coordinate with ridership and operational teams to validate functional, architectural and engineering studies as required.
• Ensure integration of maintainability, durability, and lifecycle cost considerations in design decisions.
• Risk, Cost and Schedule Control
• Identify and manage design and possible construction risks.
• Support value engineering exercises and cost optimization workshops.
• Ensure station design deliverables align with overall programme schedule and budget constraints.
• Monitor consultant performance, deliverable quality, and adherence to scope.

Procurement / Tender Preparation

• Support procurement strategy for station packages, including Scope boundary definition; Performance-based specifications; Technical evaluation criteria
• Support preparation and review of station tender documentation.
• Ensure clarity of interface clauses and technical responsibilities in tender documents.

Profile/Skills

• Accredited degree in Architecture, Building Engineering, or related discipline.
• Professional Engineer or eligibility to obtain; Registered Architect or eligibility to obtain considered an asset.
• Minimum 15–20 years of experience in major infrastructure or transportation projects, including at least 10 years in multidisciplinary station or complex building design leadership roles.
• Experience on rail or metro projects, preferably high-speed rail or large transit hubs.
• Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary teams in highly regulated environments.
• Experience coordinating brownfield integration with existing operational rail networks is an asset.
• Familiarity with Alliance, Design-Build, or PPP contract models is an asset.
• Bilingual (English/French) preferred.
