Job summary

Dialpad is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the platformization roadmap for shared services, architecting decoupled, reusable services to improve developer experience, security, and scalability. This role reports to the Senior Director of Platform Engineering and can be based in Vancouver or Kitchener.

The role emphasizes backend delivery, architectural leadership, and collaboration across teams, with a strong focus on building scalable cloud-native systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong experience with distributed systems and backend software development.
• Proven debugging and troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

• Define a 1–3 year roadmap for Shared Services architecture.
• Write architectural design documents easily understood by the team.
• Provide estimates for technical resources and project planning.
• Lead execution of Shared Services platformization projects to meet milestones.
• Develop well-tested features with robust test hooks and low defect rates.
• Serve as the technical expert for a product area; devise elegant solutions.
• Review designs to ensure integration and business alignment.
• Deliver internal demos showing how features fit into the larger platform.
• Contribute to engaging projects that delight users.

Your role

As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll own the platformization roadmap for shared services, architecting a plan to decouple existing functionality into highly reusable services. Your impactful work helps improve Dialpad’s developer experience, productivity, security, and scalability.

This position reports to our Senior Director of Platform Engineering and has the opportunity to be based in our Vancouver or Kitchener offices.

What you’ll do

• Define a 1-3 year roadmap/vision for Shared Services.
• Write clear and complete architectural design documents that are easily understood by other team members.
• Provide estimates on technical resources and requirements necessary to plan and begin projects.
• Take responsibility for the execution of the Shared Services platformization projects. Assist and drive where necessary to ensure the team meets its delivery milestones.
• Develop well-tested features with appropriate test hooks resulting in low defect reports and faster engineering throughput.
• Be widely recognized as the technical expert for a product area. Devise elegant solutions to difficult engineering problems.
• Review technical designs to ensure features/products are well integrated and fully meet business needs.
• Give larger scale internal demos on new features that you have completed and explain how they fit into the bigger picture.
• Continue contributing to fun projects meant to delight users!

Skills you’ll bring

• As an experienced backend-focused software engineer, you drive software delivery & operational excellence by turning well-defined business objectives into software systems, having a significant impact on organization-wide output.
• Deep experience (with examples) of architecting complex systems across multiple roles throughout your career.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong experience working with distributed systems.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Experience with highly agile and iterative development processes.
• Experience mentoring engineers and helping them grow their skills.
• Our Tech Stack: Python backend on Google Cloud Platform (AppEngine, Datastore, BigQuery, Dataflow, Memcache, Cloud Tasks, Pub/Sub), Redis, Elastic Search, Monitoring (Datadog, Grafana), Vue.js/Vuex frontend running natively in Electron, and numerous integrations with third-party services.
