Job summary

Moody’s Investors Service in Toronto seeks a Staff Software Engineer to lead design, development, and modernization of technology solutions supporting life actuarial modelling within Moody’s Insurance team.

You will mentor engineers, drive scalable architectures, collaborate with actuaries, product managers, and engineering teams to deliver robust, cloud-enabled systems and advanced analytics.

Qualifications

• Typically 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering and leadership of large-scale initiatives.
• Deep expertise in software engineering, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, and scalable design.
• Strong proficiency in C++ and Python; GPU-accelerated computing experience preferred.

Skills and Competencies

• Typically 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, including experience leading large-scale technical initiatives
• Deep expertise in software engineering principles, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, and scalable application design
• Strong proficiency in C++ and Python; additionally, experience with GPU-accelerated computing preferred
• Understanding of artificial intelligence technologies, including the ability to identify opportunities for responsible AI adoption while considering governance, risk management, and ethical use practices; hands-on experience with agentic coding tools preferred
• Extensive experience designing and building enterprise-grade applications using microservices and API-driven architectures
• Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and observability tools
• Ability to lead technical design discussions, influence engineering standards, and mentor software engineers across multiple teams
• Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and decision-making capabilities in complex technical environments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field required
• Advanced degree preferred

Responsibilities

The Staff Software Engineer will serve as a senior technical leader within Moody’s Insurance team, driving the design, development, scalability, and modernization of technology solutions that support life actuarial modelling.

• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of highly scalable, secure, and resilient software solutions supporting insurance products and platforms
• Define and promote engineering best practices, coding standards, architectural principles, and software development methodologies across the team
• Collaborate closely with actuaries, product managers, architects, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Review and optimize application performance, reliability, security, and maintainability through proactive engineering practices
• Lead technical design reviews and provide guidance on complex system integration, scalability, and modernization initiatives
• Mentor and coach engineers and actuaries through code reviews, technical leadership, knowledge sharing, and career development support
• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions leveraging cloud technologies, advanced analytics, and emerging technologies
• Drive automation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance software development and deployment processes
• Evaluate new technologies, frameworks, and tools to strengthen the organization's technical capabilities and support business growth

The team brings together actuaries, software engineers, and product leaders to deliver scalable systems and advanced capabilities that support clients globally. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a significant role in shaping the technical direction of key products while collaborating with talented colleagues in a high-impact, fast-paced environment focused on innovation, quality, and customer success.

For Canada-based roles only: The anticipated hiring base salary range for this position is$134,500.00- $195,100.00, depending on factors such as experience, education, level, skills, and location. This range is based on a full-time position. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for incentive compensation.
