About the Role: Staff Software Developer, Protected Data SRE

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) at Google combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. The Protected Data SRE team ensures that Google Cloud's services — both internally critical and externally visible — maintain reliability and uptime appropriate to customer needs, while continuously improving at a fast rate. Much of the software development work centres on optimising existing systems, building infrastructure, and eliminating toil through automation.

As a Staff-level contributor, you'll exercise technical leadership across complex systems, drive cross-functional alignment, and manage systemic risk at scale. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating at the intersection of systems engineering, software development, and organisational influence, and has a proven track record with large-scale distributed systems.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• 5 years of experience including product demand/supply planning, and production and inventory management
• 3 years of experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration (e.g., filesystems, inodes, system calls) and networking (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, software defined networking)
• Programming proficiency in at least one of: C, C++, Java, Python, or Go
• Computer networking knowledge including DNS, load balancing, and routing
• Linux/Unix system administration experience
• Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is preferred
