Job summary

Google XR team is hiring a Staff Software Developer, Android XR System Apps, to shape a next‑gen UI for Glasses and XR devices in a cross‑functional setting. You will guide multiple apps, including device companion apps, tutorials, and settings, while enabling new interaction paradigms through spatial and AI technologies.

Join a team focused on scaling AI‑powered, multimodal experiences, with emphasis on device setup, calibration, and comfort across XR platforms.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of software development in Kotlin, Java or Swift.
  • 5 years of iOS or Android app development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to technical roadmaps by proposing value projects and validating direction.
  • Design, guide and vet mobile and XR system designs and implement code.
  • Ensure timely, high-quality launches with testability and compliance.
  • Mentor the team and provide documentation and support for OEM integrations.
  • Support UX with rapid prototyping and feasibility analysis.

Job description

Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of software development experience in Kotlin, Java, or Swift.
  • 5 years of experience in iOS or Android application development.
Preferred qualifications:
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Experience in mobile app development, spatial app or 3D game development, performance optimization, software architecture or tools in the mobile space, related to the Android SDK.
  • Experience delivering mobile applications written in a reactive framework such as Jetpack Compose, React, or Swift UI.
  • Experience developing user interfaces.

As a Staff Software Developer, Android XR System Apps, you will set technical direction and participate in the design and development of a next-generation UI for Glasses. Working closely with other developers and cross-functional teams, you will design, prototype, build, and launch new user experiences that enable users to interact in new and delightful ways through XR devices. You will set technical direction for multiple apps including device companion apps for connected mobile phones, out-of-box experience, tutorials, settings, and apps related to fit and calibration. You will incorporate emerging technologies such as spatial interactions and AI-powered multi-modal conversational interfaces to provide more delightful ways for users to set up XR devices, learn about them, and optimize comfort and usability.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $207000 - $300000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Canada: $216000 - $221000 (CAD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps by proposing projects with value, and helping to validate product management direction and developer estimates.
  • Design, guide and vet systems designs across mobile and XR apps, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Ensure launches are delivered on time and at a high degree of quality by building for testability, assisting with complex issue triage, and meeting compliance launch criteria.
  • Empower the team to build delightful and OEM-extensible experiences through technical mentorship and architectural oversight. Provide documentation, reference code, and direct support for OEM partner integrations.
  • Support UX by enabling rapid protacing and by providing developer feasibility analysis for designs.
