Overview

Job title: Staff Nurse

Location: Ashdale Ward, Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax, HX3 0PW. Ashdale Ward is an all-male, acute adult mental health ward for service users aged 18 and over, based at The Dales Unit. The ward team includes Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapy, a Consultant Psychiatrist and a Psychologist.

Summary: We are seeking a motivated nurse to join our team on the acute adult ward. You will be involved in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Under the guidance of the nursing team, you will develop skills to provide inpatient assessment, treatment, and care in a safe, therapeutic, and least restrictive environment. The Trust supports staff development and learning.

Job responsibilities

Job description: This is a generic Band 5 Staff Nurse role designed for mental health services Trust-wide. The post holder is expected to:

  • Contribute to an integrated team in providing high-quality care and treatment for individuals and groups within the pathway.
  • Understand and commit to the philosophy of mental health services and local provision.
  • Be responsible and accountable for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for defined service users.
  • Utilise core nursing and specialist skills as a primary nurse.
  • Provide professional support and advice to the team, service users and carers; work with other teams within and outside the organisation.
  • Oversee and support junior staff in implementing planned care; support the Management Team as required.
Key result areas
  • Workload Management: Flexible coverage of shifts to provide a 365-day service; act as shift co-ordinator as needed; lead and coordinate the team to provide high standards of care; prioritise workload; participate in reviews and ward rounds; provide care and interventions as written in care plans.
  • Communication: Maintain up-to-date care plans; ensure proper documentation; contribute to service evaluation; maintain relationships with consultants and other teams; engage with service users and carers in planning and evaluation.
  • Human Resources / Supervision / Management: Maintain standards of care; provide direction and support to junior staff; participate in clinical and managerial supervision; engage in Personal Development Planning and team reflective activities; contribute to induction for new starters.
  • Resource Management: Assist with off-duty planning and day-to-day coverage; manage time and resources; consider budget constraints; participate in recruitment of junior staff where appropriate.
  • Decision Making and Advice: Perform comprehensive risk assessments and develop management plans; identify training needs and contribute to education of staff and students.
Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the register.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to work therapeutically with individuals or groups; ability to lead and motivate others; ability to work without direct supervision; ability to travel around the Trust as required.

Desirable:

  • Post-basic qualifications (e.g., CBT/PSI); experience mentoring or supporting learners; knowledge of Recovery models and primary nurse system; experience with psychosocial interventions and IMROC; knowledge of NHS initiatives relevant to the service.
