Job description

Sr Manager, Software Dev, Elastic Container Service

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Senior Manager, Software Development to lead engineering teams within the Elastic Container Service (ECS) organization in Vancouver, BC. ECS is a fully managed container orchestration service that enables customers to deploy, manage, and scale containerized applications with speed and reliability. In this role, you will own the technical direction and execution of multiple engineering teams, define the roadmap for ECS features and infrastructure, and grow a high-performing organization of engineers and engineering managers.

What You Will Do?

You will lead two or more engineering teams responsible for designing, building, and operating ECS services at global scale. Your teams will own the full software development lifecycle — from requirements and design through delivery, operations, and continuous improvement. You will partner directly with Principal Engineers, Product Managers, and senior AWS leaders to set a multi-year technical vision for ECS and translate that vision into quarterly and annual deliverables. You will recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent in Vancouver and collaborate across AWS globally to raise the engineering bar.

A day in the life
  • Own delivery of ECS features and platform improvements that directly serve thousands of customers running production workloads on AWS.
  • Define and execute a multi-year technical roadmap aligned to AWS ECS product strategy and customer needs.
  • Build and scale an engineering organization in Vancouver, BC, hiring and developing engineers and engineering managers.
  • Partner with Product Management and Technical Program Management to translate customer requirements into engineering plans with clear milestones and measurable outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain operational excellence standards: availability, latency, scalability, and security targets for ECS services.
  • Drive cross-team architectural decisions and resolve technical ambiguity with data and engineering rigor.
  • Represent the Vancouver engineering organization in AWS-wide planning processes, including OP1/OP2 cycles and headcount planning.
  • Hold teams accountable to high-quality engineering standards through design reviews, operational reviews, and post-incident analysis.
About the team

Vancouver is a growing AWS engineering hub with deep access to top engineering talent from world-class universities and a diverse, global technology community. As a senior leader in Vancouver, you will have the autonomy to shape the local engineering culture, establish operating rhythms, and partner with AWS teams globally to deliver ECS innovations that customers rely on every day.

Basic Qualifications
  • 10+ years of engineering experience
  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience architecting/operating solutions built on AWS, or experience implementing a cloud-based technology solution
  • Experience in Kubernetes, Docker or containers ecosystem, or experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities and experience managing full application stacks from the OS up through custom applications
  • Experience delivering technology products or services in a high growth environment
  • Experience hiring, developing and promoting engineering talent
  • Experience architecting/operating solutions built on AWS, or experience with one or more of the following domains: systems administration (Linux/Window), network administration (DNS, IPsec, BGP, VPN, Load Balancing), or programming (Node.JS, Java, Ruby, C#, Python, or PHP)
  • Experience performing complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and presenting the justification to management in a high-level review
