Sr Associate Software Engineer – Applied AI

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will join a fun, innovative Applied AI team within the AI & Data Science (AI&D) organization at Amgen.

As a Sr Associate Software Engineer, you will be an integral member of the Applied AI – AI Productivity/Custom GPT Solutions Practice team, which empowers Amgen teams and staff members to build high‑value, purpose‑driven, LLM-powered AI Assistants and/or Custom GPTs through expert design and development support. You will play a key role in driving adoption of this program across multiple Amgen organizations by partnering with cross‑functional teams and senior leaders. This role requires strong technical depth, adaptability, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast‑evolving environment.

The primary responsibility of this role is to design, develop, and deploy secure, scalable, and intuitive AI agents, Custom GPTs and associated AI capabilities on leading enterprise AI platforms and tools.

Responsibilities:

GenAI/AI Delivery:

  • Design, develop, and deploy LLM-powered Agents and/or Custom GPTs on ChatGPT Enterprise platform that leverage RAG pipelines, Apps integration and prompt engineering.
  • Contribute to the capability Roadmap through implementation of MCP-based Apps, ChatGPT Skills, Plugins and Workspace Agents.
  • Implement scalable RAG pipelines that ground assistant responses in trusted enterprise data.
  • Build integration layers and event-driven orchestrations using N8N (webhooks, nodes, APIs) to connect systems, trigger agent workflows, and implement human‑in‑the‑loop steps.
  • Evaluate emerging AI models, enterprise platforms, agent frameworks, retrieval technologies, and orchestration patterns, including OpenAI, Databricks, LangChain/LangGraph, and AWS AI services.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy, security, and regulatory standards of the company.
  • Implement automated evaluation, regression testing, tracing, and monitoring to assess retrieval quality, context, response quality, safety, latency, and cost.
  • Apply relevant advancements in generative AI, agentic systems, retrieval, evaluation, and AI software engineering to continuously improve solution quality and delivery practices.

Collaboration & Enablement:

  • Work closely with functional teams, product owners, data engineers, platform and DevOps teams, and business SMEs to translate requirements into reliable, production‑grade solutions.
  • Produce clear technical design documents, runbooks, and handover materials to support operational sustainability.
  • Support office hours and other technical enablement sessions.
  • Support junior engineers and contribute towards technical guidance, reusable patterns, and engineering best practices for GenAI adoption

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of experience in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of professional experiencein software development and system design.
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experiencebuilding & deploying Generative AI applications, Assistants or Custom GPTs in production centered around OpenAI(preferred), Claude or Gemini.
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experiencedesigning and building cloud‑native solutions (preferably on AWS using services like Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, Amazon EKS)
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experiencewith vector databases, embedding models, and RAG pipelines.
  • Experience designing and implementing secure RESTful integrations using API gateways, OAuth, service identities, and enterprise authentication patterns.
  • Experience effectively using AI-assisted software development tools such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot while applying appropriate code‑review, security, and quality controls.
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience building modern web applications using TypeScript, React, and Next.js, with strong knowledge of component‑driven architecture, design systems, REST/GraphQL integration, state management, automated testing, performance optimization, and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with GenAI libraries (Transformers, LangChain, Hugging Face, etc.).
  • Ability to work effectively with global, distributed teams using Scaled Agile methodologies.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High degree of initiative and self‑motivation, with a servant‑leadership mindset.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision while delivering high‑quality outcomes.
  • Excellent analytical, gap, and fit‑assessment skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities successfully.
  • Team‑oriented, with a strong focus on achieving shared goals.
  • Experience working with Power Automate, Uipath, Tableau, JIRA, and Smartsheet.
  • 2+ years of experience with Agentic AI platforms and frameworks (Langchain, AWS Bedrock, Uipath Maestro).
  • Familiarity with GxP environments and systems validation.
  • Experience working in regulated industries such as biotech or healthcare.
