Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this role is a key member of the Financial Reporting & Compliance team within the Controller’s group at WestJet. The successful candidate will research accounting issues, assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements and other regulatory disclosures, interact with external auditors during assurance engagements, be responsible for analyzing and recording of complex accounting transactions, and provide specialized accounting guidance as required to stakeholders throughout WestJet.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and prepare analyses to understand emerging accounting pronouncements and assess and analyze their impact on WestJet.
  • Provide technical accounting research for accounting issues arising from new business transactions or initiatives.
  • Responsible for research and accounting for complex transactions such as: derivatives and financial instruments, leases, maintenance provision, share-based payments and share capital transactions, join venture accounting, and acquisition accounting as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of the consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements and disclosures in accordance with IFRS, as well as the MD&A, Audit Committee reporting, as required.
  • Act as a main point of contact to the external auditors and for various WestJet internal stakeholders to coordinate quarterly reviews and annual audits.
  • Act as a technical accounting resource, and present on accounting topics within Finance and to WestJet stakeholders as required.
  • Interact with Internal Controls and advise on internal control improvements as appropriate.
Education and Experience:
  • University Degree plus
  • 4-5 years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Completion of an accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) is required.
  • Strong technical accounting background in IFRS and experience with complex accounting issues.
  • Attention to detail, organized and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to handle pressure and meet tight timelines in an environment with a high volume of activity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • A highly motivated and energetic individual with the ability to take responsibility for initiatives and produce results.
