The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) seeks a Regulatory Design Specialist to work on regulatory design and delivery projects, delivering high-quality analyses and instruments. You will collaborate with technical experts, prepare executive-ready documents, and assist senior staff on complex initiatives.

The role requires a bachelor’s in a relevant field and 5–7 years’ regulatory experience, with strong communication and multitasking abilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in policy studies, economics, law, sciences, engineering, or business.
• 5-7 years of experience in regulatory analysis, regulatory operations, policy development, or a related field.
• Knowledge of Alberta energy regulations and related instruments is required.
• Professional designations in Engineering, Science, or Project Management are assets.
• Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills with project management experience.

Responsibilities

• Conduct technical, policy, and regulatory analyses for Regulatory Design & Delivery projects and provide guidance to staff.
• Design and develop regulatory instruments with technical experts.
• Craft clear documents for executive decision-making and stakeholder feedback.

Salary Range: T3, Level 5, $102,000 - $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Regulatory Design Specialist (RDS) to join our high-performing team. The RDS is a foundational role that supports key projects critical to our operations. You'll work independently on low to moderately complex regulatory design and maintenance projects, ensuring quality and consistent output. The RDS role plays a pivotal role in ensuring regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement. This role demands multitasking in a deadline-driven environment and balancing AER goals with public and industry needs. What your day-to-day will look like

• Conduct technical, policy, and regulatory analyses for Regulatory Design & Delivery (RDD) projects, identify and resolve issues, and provide guidance and recommendations to AER staff.
• Design and develop regulatory instruments in collaboration with technical experts.
• Craft clear and concise documents for executive decision-making, support stakeholder feedback and final publication alignment.
• Assist the Regulatory Information Analyst and support Senior RDSs on higher complexity projects.
• Engage in professional development to enhance skills and contribute to AER’s regulatory processes.

What we’re looking for in you

• Bachelor’s degree in policy studies, economics, law, sciences, engineering, or business.
• 5-7 years of experience in regulatory analysis, regulatory operations, policy development, or a related field.
• Knowledge of Alberta’s energy-related Rules and regulations and associated regulatory instruments (i.e. Directives, Manuals, Specified Enactment Directions, Information Letters, etc.) is required.
• Professional designations in Engineering, Science, or Project Management are considered an asset.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated project management experience and ability to manage multiply priorities.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects efficiently.
• Adaptable to changing timelines and deliverables.
