Job description
Overview

Play a key role in shaping climate resilience and water stewardship across Gold Fields’ global assets.

At Gold Fields, we’re building a sustainable and resilient future for mining. As our Specialist, Hydrology and Climate Change Adaptation, you’ll bring technical expertise in climate analysis, water balance modelling, and hydrological risk management to strengthen how we design, operate, and close our assets worldwide.

The Opportunity

Based at our Perth corporate office within the Group Technical team, this newly created role will support the development and implementation of Gold Fields’ climate adaptation and integrated water balance frameworks.

You’ll help assess how changing climatic conditions influence surface water systems, tailings storage facilities, and water-retaining structures, ensuring our operations are designed to thrive under future climate scenarios.

Working closely with our assets and other Group Functions, you’ll turn complex climate and hydrological data into actionable insights that drive better decision-making and long-term resilience.

What You’ll Do
  • Analyse climatic and hydrological datasets to identify variability, risks, and long-term trends.
  • Develop, calibrate, and maintain site and catchment-scale water balance models (GoldSim or equivalent).
  • Support climate risk assessments for rainfall extremes, droughts, floods, and water availability.
  • Integrate climate adaptation measures into engineering design, stormwater management, and closure planning.
  • Support development of predictive models to assess performance of water-retaining structures and TSFs under future climate scenarios.
  • Collaborate across disciplines, engineering, sustainability, and operations to embed best practices in water and climate resilience.
  • Prepare technical reports, dashboards, and documentation to support informed business planning and governance.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, geology, finance, sustainability, legal) and external stakeholders (investors, regulators, joint venture partners) to ensure alignment on risk mitigation measures and controls.
About You
  • You have a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in a mining and engineering environment.
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related discipline.
  • You’re a technically skilled and solutions-focused specialist with experience in:
  • Hydrology, climate science, or water resources engineering.
  • Water balance modelling and climate data interpretation.
  • Using hydrological modelling software (e.g. GoldSim, HEC-HMS, MIKE SHE).
  • Translating complex data into practical, risk-informed recommendations.
  • Knowledge of risk management, scenario analysis.

You thrive on collaboration and are passionate about ensuring the mining industry leads in climate resilience and sustainability.
