Overview

Special Constable – General (POOL)

The Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) is committed to delivering professional and ethical policing to the communities we serve. We are seeking community-focused, detail-oriented, and disciplined individuals to join our Operational Support Branch as Special Constables.

As part of the Operational Support Branch, the Special Constable performs a range of duties related to custody management, prisoner transport, court security, and community safety initiatives. This includes working at the TBPS Headquarters Detention Facility, providing secure courtroom supervision, and ensuring the safe and lawful movement of persons in custody.

Special Constables may also be assigned to the Housing Safety Unit, where they support community-based policing strategies by providing a visible and proactive presence within designated housing communities. In this role, they work collaboratively with Thunder Bay Police officers, Thunder Bay District Social Services Board, and community agencies to promote safety, deter criminal activity, and address quality-of-life concerns. Duties may include responding to non-emergency incidents, engaging with vulnerable populations, and participating in crime prevention and outreach efforts.

The Special Constable position is critical to maintaining the integrity of police operations and court processes, while also enhancing community trust through safety-focused initiatives in local housing environments.

Special Constables are not sworn police officers but have limited police powers, duties, and responsibilities as authorized under the CSPA and their appointment.

  • Possess a valid First Aid and CPR (Basic Rescuer Level) certificate.
