Job summary

Lyft in Toronto is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to own logging, metrics, and observability tooling. You will help scale and improve reliability and performance of cloud platforms while collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement SLOs and monitoring strategies.

The role requires 3+ years in software development, automation, and systems engineering, with production-ready Go or Python, Kubernetes, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and AWS experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years on teams responsible for software development, automation, and systems engineering.
  • Proficiency in production-ready Go or Python code.
  • Experience operating infrastructure in public cloud environments (AWS).
  • Experience building observability infrastructure for robust monitoring and analysis.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and multi-cluster production environments.
  • Proven track record with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and open-source tracing/alerting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, improve, and develop tooling and systems to enhance reliability, scalability, and efficiency of the platform.
  • Assist teams in defining SLOs and provide tooling to monitor and balance feature speed with reliability.
  • Analyze metrics from OS, control planes, and apps to aid fault detection and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve Lyft observability and meet developers' needs across design, production readiness, and capacity planning.
  • Keep and maintain documentation for infrastructure operations and insights.
  • Identify repeatable actions and automate repetitive tasks.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to incidents to mitigate customer-impacting events.

As an Observability team member, you are responsible for the operation and maintenance of our logging and metrics infrastructure. You ensure all teams at Lyft are aware of the operational health of their products by monitoring system availability and take a holistic view of our platform performance. You build software and platforms to automate infrastructure platform operations and management. By measuring and monitoring our operations you find opportunities to improve our systems in order to push our platform forward. You provide our partners with the support they need to help them build robust large scale distributed systems.

Specifically we are searching for someone who brings fresh perspectives, enjoys collaborating with cross-functional teams in order to continually improve our products and services for our customers.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain, improve, and develop tooling and systems that enhance the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of our platform.
  • Assist engineering teams in defining service-level objectives (SLOs) and provide the necessary tooling to monitor and balance feature development speed and reliability.
  • Maintain and analyze metrics from operating systems, control planes, and applications to assist in fault detection and performance enhancement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to enhance Lyft's observability and meet developers' needs, ensuring alignment with design and production readiness reviews, platform management, and capacity planning.
  • Keep and maintain our documentation at a world-class level by documenting infrastructure operations processes and insights.
  • Identifying repeatable actions, and automating repetitive tasks.
  • Participate in our team's on-call rotations, respond to incidents, and support other teams to mitigate customer-impacting events.
Experience:
  • 3+ years of experience working on teams responsible for software development, automation, and systems engineering.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or a relevant discipline.
  • Proficiency in creating production-ready code in one or more high-level languages, such as Go or Python.
  • Experience operating infrastructure in public cloud environments, such as AWS, including familiarity with Managed Services.
  • Experience in building and maintaining observability infrastructure to support robust monitoring and analysis.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and managing multi-cluster environments in production settings.
  • Proven track record with modern Observability stack, including proficiency in Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and other open-source tracing and alerting frameworks.

The expected base pay range for this position in the Toronto area is CAD $108,000 - CAD $135,000, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
