Entries is looking for a full-stack software engineer to work in Toronto, right beside accountants, turning judgment into reliable systems and building the technology that runs the firm.

You will design and ship agents and integrations across the stack, including QuickBooks and other tools, while shaping the core operating system and audit trails. Five days in the Toronto office with meaningful equity and a base salary.

Responsibilities

• Sit with accountants and turn recurring exceptions into durable systems.
• Design, build, and ship agents that gather evidence, process documents, prepare entries, surface exceptions, and draft deliverables.
• Build the review surfaces where people remain in the loop: approve, correct, undo, and teach the system.

• Strengthen Entries Core, our internal agentic operating system: tasks, context, rules, evals, audit trails, and permissions.
• Ship product that accountants actually use every day, not demos that look good in a screenshot.
• Make schema, architecture, and infrastructure decisions that balance shipping speed with integrity.
• Treat every accountant correction as a chance to improve a rule, a prompt, a workflow, or an eval.
• Protect client data, keep an audit trail, and refuse to automate accountability.
• Spot broken processes and eliminate them instead of wrapping them in a prettier interface.

Entries is building an AI-native accounting firm for owner-operated businesses. We are looking for a full-stack software engineer to sit next to accountants, turn judgment into systems that keep working, and help build the technology that runs the firm.

Entries exists to power prosperity for owner-operated businesses.

Business owners should be building their companies—not closing the books, chasing receipts, worrying about filings, or trying to decode what their numbers mean. We are building the financial back office we wanted when running our own companies: responsive, proactive, and actually useful.

We are a team of accountants and engineers rebuilding the accounting firm around what AI now makes possible. Agents do the repetitive work: gathering evidence, processing documents, preparing entries, surfacing exceptions, and drafting deliverables. Accountants exercise judgment, own the client relationship, set the standard, and remain accountable for the result.

We automate the work. We do not automate accountability.

The role

This is a full-stack role with an unusually broad mandate.

You will sit next to accountants and hear the exception as it happens. Then you will ship the agent, workflow, or integration that kills it permanently. The product is the full experience of working with Entries, and you are accountable for making it real.

You will work across the stack: the surfaces accountants use every day, the agents that do the repetitive work, the integrations that connect source systems, and the operating system that holds client context, rules, and audit trails together.

This is not a conventional SaaS engineering job attached to an accounting firm. We want someone who is excited to rethink how a professional-services firm should operate when accountants and engineers work side by side.

What you will do

The engineering experience we are looking for

You have strong hands-on full-stack experience shipping production systems that real people depend on. Your experience should include many of the following:

Product and systems

• Shipping full-stack product in TypeScript: Next.js / React on the front end, APIs and services behind it, and PostgreSQL or a close equivalent underneath.
• Designing data models that stay coherent as the product grows, including multi-tenant or client-scoped data.
• Building against messy third-party APIs and owning the edge cases: auth, pagination, file formats, rate limits, and write-back.
• Making production software reliable: environments, deployments, monitoring, and incident response appropriate to the current scale.
• Writing code that other people can understand, review, and inherit.
• Balancing short-term flexibility against a schema and architecture you will still want in a year.

Agents, integrations, and operating systems

• Building LLM or agent systems with tools, structured output, evaluation, and a human in the loop—not just a chat box.
• Turning domain expertise into rules, skills, or workflows that agents can follow and accountants can edit.
• Connecting source systems (accounting, messaging, documents, payments) into one coherent trail of work.
• Designing feedback loops: a person corrects the system, the system gets better, and the next exception is smaller.
• Caring about explainability, review, undo, and auditability when the work is financial and consequential.
• Understanding enough of the business context to know why an accountant coded something one way instead of another.

You do not need to have built every piece of this stack. You do need strong fundamentals, sound judgment, and the ability to know what you know, recognize what you do not, and get to the right answer.

What we are looking for

Required

• Significant full-stack software engineering experience shipping production systems.
• Comfort moving between frontend, backend, data, and integrations without treating any of them as someone else's job.
• Genuine interest in agents and AI as leverage, with the judgment to supervise them rather than worship them.
• High standards for correctness, documentation, security, and professional integrity.
• Comfort operating with ambiguity and building systems where none yet exist.
• The ability to sit with accountants, learn the work, and translate it into product without waiting for a perfect spec.
• The ability and willingness to work full-time from our Toronto office, five days a week.

You may be especially well suited if

• You have shipped product in a small team where you owned the outcome, not just a ticket.
• You have built against QuickBooks, Slack, Stripe, banks, or similarly messy operational APIs.
• You have worked on workflow, review, or operations software, not only consumer apps.
• You are slightly jaded by software that organizes work instead of doing it.
• You can move comfortably between a client exception, a data-model decision, an agent eval, and a product discussion with an accountant.
• You care about building a durable professional firm, not just assembling a portfolio of features.

How we work

Engineers sit next to accountants

The shortest path between an accounting problem and a product improvement should be a conversation. You hear the exception as it happens, then you kill it permanently.

Engineers make the product real

Accountants set the standard and remain responsible for the result. You write the code that turns that judgment into systems that keep working.

We prefer judgment to process

Process should make good judgment easier, not replace it. We give people context and a clear quality bar, then expect them to make decisions and own outcomes.

We do not bill by the hour

Clients want work done quickly, correctly, and for a predictable price. Your job is not to accumulate hours. It is to create the best outcome with the least unnecessary work.

We work together in person

This role is full-time in our Toronto office, five days a week. We are building a company where an accounting issue can become a product improvement through a ten-minute conversation between the accountant who found it and the engineer who can fix it.
