Job summary

EvenUp, a fast-growing legal tech company, seeks a backend engineer for the DocGen team building AI-powered document generation for personal injury law. You’ll own backend services, design scalable systems, and ship features from concept to production, collaborating with Product, Design, and Applied AI.

This hybrid role is based in Toronto or San Francisco, with in-office presence three days per week. You’ll help shape architecture and scale one of EvenUp’s core products to deliver real customer

Life as an Engineer at EvenUp

Join the team building EvenUp’s AI-powered document generation platform - one of the company’s core AI products. The DocGen team is responsible for designing and building the backend systems that power how legal documents are generated, helping personal injury attorneys produce high-quality work more efficiently and at scale.

You’ll own complex technical problems from design through production, working on document generation workflows where AI is a core part of the solution - not an afterthought. You’ll have the opportunity to influence architecture, shape technical direction, and partner closely with Product, Design, and Applied AI to deliver meaningful customer impact.

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy building scalable backend systems, thrive in fast-moving and ambiguous environments, and want the autonomy to take ideas from concept to production. Engineers on DocGen are trusted to make technical decisions, drive projects end-to-end, and help shape the future of one of EvenUp’s most important products.

What you’ll do:

• Design, build, and maintain backend services powering EvenUp’s document generation platform.

What we look for:

• Strong software development experience, with hands-on expertise in Python or languages such as Go, Java, Node.js, or C++.
• Proven ability to design and ship scalable, production-grade systems, including APIs and distributed systems.
• Experience owning projects end-to-end in fast-paced, high-growth or startup environments.
• Bonus: Experience with AI-powered applications, legal tech, document generation systems or social impact–driven products.

This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of being in our Toronto or San Francisco office three days per week.
