Job summary

Randstad Digital in Toronto, ON is seeking a Software Engineer to join our engineering team on a 12-month contract hybrid role. You will work on backend Java and Scala services powering client onboarding for enterprise web applications.

You will design, build, and maintain components using Spring MVC, develop SOAP/REST APIs, and collaborate with Angular/React front-end teams while coordinating with QA, BA, PM, and external partners.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of backend Java experience with Spring MVC in enterprise apps.
• Hands-on with Tomcat 9.0+ and Liferay 7.x (or similar app servers).
• Experience designing, hosting, and consuming SOAP and REST APIs.
• Proficiency with CSS3, responsive design, and front-end collaboration (Angular/React a plus).
• Knowledge of Oracle/SQL Server and PL/SQL; Scala alongside Java desirable.
• Strong verbal and written communication for cross-team collaboration.
• Nice to have: understanding web apps end-to-end and production deployments.

Roles and responsibilities:

We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer to join our client\'s engineering team in Toronto. In this role, you will work on backend Java and Scala services supporting enterprise web applications responsible for client and account onboarding. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to build, integrate, and maintain high-performing, secure systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Backend Development: Design, build, and maintain robust web applications using Core Java and Scala, integrated with Spring MVC framework and application servers.
• API Development & Integration: Develop, host, and consume SOAP and RESTful web services.
• Front-End Collaboration: Support Angular and React-based web applications, working with CSS3, responsive design, jQuery, and web/server caching technologies.
• Database & Systems Interaction: Work alongside Oracle and SQL Server database environments, reviewing and understanding existing PL/SQL logic.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner effectively with QA engineers, Business Analysts, Project Managers, and external technical teams to ensure seamless solution delivery.
• Production Support & Quality: Perform code reviews, contribute to application design, and support technical deployments and ongoing maintenance in production environments.

Must have skills/Qualifications/experience

A minimum of 5-10yrs of the following:

• Core Development: Strong experience with Core Java and backend web technologies (Spring MVC).
• Application Servers: Hands-on experience with Tomcat (9.0+), Liferay (7.x), or similar application servers (JBoss, GlassFish, etc.).
• Web Services & XML: Proven experience designing, hosting, and consuming SOAP and REST based APIs.
• Front-End Technologies: Proficiency with CSS3, responsive web design, jQuery, VM templates, and caching architectures. Functional exposure to Angular and React is a strong plus.
• Database Exposure: Working knowledge of SQL (Oracle, SQL Server) and familiarity reading PL/SQL.
• Secondary Skills: Proficiency or strong willingness to work with Scala alongside Java.
• Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple integration teams.

Nice to have Qualifications

1. Should have a very good understanding of how web-based applications work, end to end
2. Experience with working on production deployments, and technically supporting applications in production.
3. Be able to perform code reviews and be able to design applications.
