Job description

The Software Engineer position is responsible for the design, development, testing, and implementation of high-quality application systems and microservices in coordination with the broader Technology team. The overall objective of this role is to contribute hands‑on engineering expertise across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), delivering scalable, resilient, and secure solutions while collaborating effectively within an Agile team environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy robust backend services and microservices using Java and Spring Boot framework.
  • Write clean, maintainable, modular, and well‑tested code following enterprise engineering standards, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Implement comprehensive automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, and contract tests, to ensure code quality and system reliability.
  • Participate in and contribute to peer code reviews, providing constructive feedback to ensure code quality, security standards, and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline implementation, deployment automation, and version control workflows across environments.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical defects, performance bottlenecks, and production issues through structured root cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, DevOps, QA, and cross‑functional technology teams during sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand‑ups, and retrospectives.
  • Assist in maintaining technical documentation, architecture decision records (ADRs), API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger), and operational runbooks.
  • Operate with a limited level of direct supervision, exercising sound engineering judgment and technical autonomy on assigned features and components.
  • Support senior engineers in evaluating technical debt, modernizing legacy systems, and adopting modern architectural and cloud‑native practices.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Qualifications:

  • 2–5 years of relevant hands‑on software development experience.
  • Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, Object‑Oriented Programming (OOP), and microservices architecture.
  • Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Practical experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and tools such as Jenkins or Tekton, and deployment platforms such as Harness.
  • Proficiency in source code management using Git (GitHub and/or Bitbucket).
  • Preferred familiarity with Linux/Unix operating systems and shell scripting.
  • Preferred familiarity with Python for scripting, automation, or service development.
  • Prior experience or familiarity with containerization and orchestration platforms such as OpenShift or Kubernetes is a plus (nice to have).
  • Understanding of secure coding standards (OWASP), vulnerability remediation, and audit/compliance requirements.
  • Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with non‑relational (NoSQL) databases (e.g., MongoDB, Couchbase) would be a plus.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in a related technical discipline is preferred.
