Job summary

Safe Software is seeking a Software Development Manager for the FME Form product group in Surrey, BC. You will lead a skilled team, coach engineers, and partner with product owners to deliver complex dataflow projects that empower customers to author data flows and integrate with the FME Platform.

You will work closely with the Director of Software Development and cross-functional teams to prioritize initiatives, manage risks, and drive continuous improvement in development practices, including

Qualifications

• 7+ years in software development including 3+ years leading software teams as a people manager, team lead, or similar role.
• Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and Agile development practices.
• Working knowledge of software development in any language (e.g., C++, Python, Java); hands-on coding not expected.
• Product owner or project management experience with backlog management and feature prioritization using Jira or equivalent.
• Openness to adopting AI tools within a development team.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with empathy and clarity.
• Demonstrated ability to support team health and build inclusive, high-performing teams.
• Ability to balance technical direction with team and business priorities.
• Open and adaptable mindset toward change.

Job description

As a Software Development Manager, you will oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of technical projects within your team. You’ll collaborate with Product, UX, and other stakeholders to prioritize work, help shape technical priorities, and ensure smooth delivery.

You’ll also support the growth and well-being of team members through coaching, feedback, and development opportunities. Your leadership will help the team navigate challenges, align with product goals, and continuously improve their practices and performance.

This is a people‑first leadership role for someone who is passionate about developing talent, supporting delivery, and fostering collaboration. You’ll also serve as a bridge between your team and the broader organization, helping align business needs with technical implementation.

About The Team

As part of the FME Form product group, you’ll join a group of collaborative development teams composed of tech leaders, developers, quality analysts, and student interns who work together as a team and alongside product managers and user experience designers, on complex technical projects that provide direct value to our users. In this role, you’ll report to our Director, Software Development and work closely with them to support the team and its priorities.

As a part of this close-knit and diverse team, you will work together with internal stakeholders to maintain and extend our flagship FME Form products that delight customers and empower them to author dataflows that can be shared, reused, and integrated with the FME Platform.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Software Development Manager, FME Form, you will:

• Lead a team of developers through coaching, feedback, and professional development, in close collaboration with your Director.
• Manage people responsibilities for your direct reports, including performance conversations, calibration, and other HR processes.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, and technical stakeholders to define and prioritize work.
• Act as product owner and project manager for your team, partnering with Product Managers, designers, your Director, and tech leaders to manage the backlog, prioritize features and internal improvements, and see planned work through from kickoff to delivery.
• Oversee technical delivery, helping manage project flow and addressing risks early.
• Support architecture, product, and design discussions with QA, Customer Support, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure alignment and inclusion of team voices.
• Build a positive, inclusive team culture centred on collaboration and shared ownership.
• Guide hiring, onboarding, and team growth with a focus on skill development and values alignment.
• Champion continuous improvement and openness to change in tools, development processes, practices, and communication, including AI-enabled ways of working.
• Act as a liaison between your team and other parts of the organization, advocating for both team and business needs.

• 7+ years in software development, including 3+ years leading software teams as a people manager, team lead, or similar role. Direct people management experience strongly preferred.

Nice to Have:

• Experience with C++ software development.
• Familiarity with Safe Software’s platform or similar technical domains.
• Involvement in mentoring, DEI, or culture‑building initiatives.
• Knowledge of hiring practices, onboarding, and team‑building techniques.
• Experience with AI Coding Agents (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot).
