Job summary

Actalent in Waterloo, ON is seeking a test automation engineer to design, develop, and maintain automated Python scripts and tools for verifying new feature functionality.

You will work with dev and test teams to translate requirements into automation, review code, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines while expanding hardware-based automation with Arduino.

This contract role requires strong Python, OO design, multi-threading, and experience with PyTest, Selenium, and batch/shell scripting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
• 3+ years of object‑oriented analysis, design, multi‑threading, and data structures.
• 3+ years of hands‑on Python development.
• Strong Python proficiency and OOP concepts.
• Experience with PyTest or similar testing frameworks.
• Ability to understand requirements and translate into tests.
• Proven debugging and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with GUI testing tools like Squish or Selenium.
• Groovy and Java development experience.
• Batch and shell scripting on Windows/Linux.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain automated test scripts and tools in Python to verify new feature functionality.
• Support and enhance existing test automation solutions by implementing bug fixes and updates as needed.
• Execute automated test suites, analyze results, identify root causes of issues, and validate fixes.
• Contribute to overall code quality by actively participating in code reviews and suggesting improvements.
• Collaborate closely with development and test teams to understand testing requirements and translate them into effective automation solutions.
• Monitor messaging platforms and provide timely support for development and other test teams using the automation infrastructure.
• Develop hardware‑based automation solutions using Arduino and other microcontrollers to streamline workflows.
• Apply object‑oriented analysis and design principles, multi‑threading, algorithms, and data structures in test automation and tool development.
• Debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively, ensuring reliable and stable automated test execution.
• Identify opportunities to improve code efficiency and performance within the test automation framework.
• Utilize automated GUI testing solutions to validate user interfaces and end‑to‑end workflows.
• Create and maintain batch and shell scripts for Windows and Linux environments to support automation and continuous testing processes.
• Work within automated testing environments and frameworks to ensure robust and scalable test coverage.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of experience with object‑oriented analysis and design, including multi‑threading, algorithms, and data structures.
• At least 3 years of hands‑on, real‑time experience with Python development.
• Strong proficiency in Python, including object‑oriented programming concepts and class design.
• Experience with automated testing environments and frameworks such as PyTest, unit testing frameworks, or Slash.
• Ability to fully understand technical requirements and testing needs, and respond directly and appropriately to complex questions.
• Proven ability to debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively.
• Demonstrated experience with automated GUI testing solutions such as Squish or Selenium.
• Proven experience with Groovy and Java development.
• Experience with batch scripting on Windows and shell scripting on Linux command line.
• Solid understanding of software development principles, including data structures, object‑oriented design, and algorithms.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous deployment) systems, such as Jenkins.
• Experience working with microcontrollers, for example Arduino, to build hardware‑based automation solutions.
• Familiarity with embedded operating systems such as Linux and QNX.
• Experience with shell scripting and automation in both Windows and Linux environments.
• Exposure to agile methodologies and associated tools.
• Experience in test automation frameworks and tooling for large‑scale software systems.
• Understanding of messaging platforms used to support development and test teams.
• Experience contributing to and maintaining a fully automated pipeline that supports daily development activities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Waterloo, ON.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job‑related factors.
