Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) for a contract role based in Waterloo, Ontario. You will build and maintain Python-based automated test frameworks, contribute to CI/CD and a large automation node fleet, and work with both Windows and Linux environments to ensure high-quality software delivery.

You will develop tests, analyze results, and troubleshoot failures while collaborating with development and test teams to implement robust automation solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with object-oriented analysis and design, multi-threading, algorithms, and data structures.
• At least 1 year of professional experience in Python development.
• Experience with PyTest, unit testing frameworks, or similar frameworks.
• Strong ability to comprehend requirements and testing needs.
• Proven ability to debug and troubleshoot code and test failures.
• Knowledge of OO concepts.
• OS knowledge of Windows and Linux.

Responsibilities

• Execute automated tests, analyze results, identify root causes of issues, and validate fixes to ensure software quality.
• Monitor messaging platforms and provide timely support to development and other test teams for automation-related issues.
• Ensure regular maintenance of lab equipment, including expansion and upgrades as needed to maintain optimal operational performance.
• Support existing automation solutions by implementing bug fixes, enhancements, and updates as required.
• Develop automated test scripts and tools in Python to verify new feature functionality and improve test coverage.
• Contribute to code quality by participating in code reviews and adhering to sound coding practices.
• Interface with development and test teams to understand testing requirements, technical questions, and automation needs, and translate them into effective test solutions.
• Debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively, ensuring issues are resolved in a timely and robust manner.
• Write clean, well-structured, and well-documented code that is easy to maintain and extend.
• Apply object-oriented design and development principles, including algorithms and data structures, in building test automation solutions.
• Work with and support a fully automated CI/CD pipeline and a large fleet of automation nodes serving cross-functional development teams around the clock.
• Use general operating system knowledge (Windows and Linux) to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot test environments.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
• Professional experience with object-oriented analysis and design, multi-threading, algorithms, and data structures (co-op experience or schoolwork accepted).
• At least 1 year of professional experience in Python development (co-op experience or schoolwork accepted).
• Experience working with automated testing environments and frameworks such as PyTest, unit testing frameworks, or Slash.
• Strong ability to comprehend requirements and fully understand technical questions and testing needs, responding directly and appropriately.
• Proven ability to debug and troubleshoot code and test failures effectively.
• Knowledge of classes and core object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts.
• Ability to write clean, well-structured, and well-documented code following sound coding practices.
• General operating system knowledge of both Windows and Linux.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins.
• Experience with batch and shell scripting, including Windows and Linux command line scripting.
• Experience working with microcontrollers, for example Arduino or similar platforms.
• Experience with Groovy and Java development.
• Experience with automated GUI testing solutions such as Squish or Selenium.
• Familiarity with embedded operating systems such as Linux or QNX and working with microcontrollers.
• Ability to articulate how to improve code efficiency and performance.
• Experience or interest in test automation and tools development within automotive infotainment and connectivity domains.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Waterloo, ON.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $38.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
