Job description

Position Summary

Line of business: Valuation & Advisory Services (VAS), Canada

Reports to: Vice President, Digital Operations

Location: Based out of either our Toronto, Mississauga, North York, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, or Halifax office.

Work model: Hybrid (~3 days/week in-office), with flexibility.

Travel: Occasionally, within Canada.

About the Role

This is a junior development position built around learning. We are looking for someone early in their career who wants to grow into a strong generalist developer, and who likes the idea of building software for a business they can put their stamp on.

The job is split into two buckets. You will write code across several domains and codebases, along with the occasional custom script for a complex client mandate. You will also spend real time with the people your code serves. Appraisal is a specialized business with its own vocabulary and complexities, and the best ideas surface when you engage with someone using the software and working through a deliverable. You will have both the time and a standing invitation to learn on the front lines of the business.

You will report to the Vice President, Digital Operations in Valuation & Advisory Services, Canada. This is a newly created position and the second technical role in the group, so expect few layers between an idea and a shipped change. You will move across projects, technologies, and technical functions rather than owning one narrow slice of a large system.

Most of the work centers on Evergreen, our end-to-end appraisal application, which is used every day by CBRE appraisal professionals from Vancouver to Halifax. Evergreen is a Python and Qt desktop application with a SQL Server backend, and it is the primary platform we use to complete client work, from first contact through final delivery. Roughly 100 people depend on it. It is stable and it works well, so our attention now moves to building new capabilities, responding more rapidly to user feedback and continuing to improve overall reliability and longevity.

What You Will Do
  • Build and extend Evergreen. Your first substantial deliverable will be a major new feature, migrating a core capability from a legacy system into a first-party plugin within Evergreen. Target is four to six months, with support from your manager throughout.
  • Improve the experience continuously. A standing commitment to making the tool better for the people who use it.
  • Invest in the codebase. Expand the test suite, raise code quality, profile and optimize slow code.
  • Own the Evergreen Support channel. Volume is light, but front-line user support is a key aspect of the role. Triage, answer, and fix. Minimal on-call requirement outside Eastern/Atlantic business hours.
  • Reach out to appraisers before they reach out to you. Learn the business, find where the process slows them down and bring what you hear back into the roadmap.
  • Take on ad hoc automation and scripting for large or complex client mandates.

As you grow into the role, we intend to hand off core application programming to you. Valuation model and template design will remain with the VP, Digital Operations, so you will not be building models from scratch.

What You Will Need

Technical foundation. Demonstrated proficiency in Python software development using Git as a version control system. More specifically, we are looking for experience with Windows desktop application development, or a real willingness to learn it. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word is an important prerequisite.

Range over depth. SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Redis, Django, Flask, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Kubernetes and Terraform all appear in our work. We do not expect you to know all of them. We are selecting for a can-do attitude and a generalist instinct rather than a checklist of technologies.

Front-end web or mobile development is not a core focus of this role.

Business aptitude. Willingness to learn and apply appraisal fundamentals. Experience with finance basics and the time value of money will be helpful.

Communication and collaboration. You can sit with a busy appraiser, ask good questions, listen past the stated request and come away understanding the actual problem. You write clearly. You are patient and work well with people who are not technically proficient.

Independence. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage several priorities at once on a small team where your input lands quickly.

Security mindset. You treat security as a core part of the work rather than a review step at the end, and you can spot the risk in a design before it ships.

Education. A four-year bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of professional experience, open-source maintenance or self-directed learning.

French language proficiency is a asset, but not required.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in Canada without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future

On Craft and the Use of AI

We care about craftsmanship. That means creative problem-solving, and it also means understanding your own code, owning the software development process and taking pride in your work. You will be accountable for what you ship.

AI tools are available, and we expect you to use them with deliberate intent, on a reasonable budget, with full ownership of the output. We use AI where it genuinely saves time or helps to uncover insights. We do not use it as a substitute for thinking through a hard problem.

What We Offer
  • Progression. Strong performance moves you from Software Development Analyst to Software Developer and further.
  • Training support. In whatever direction serves your growth and the role.
  • Real influence. On a two-person technical team inside a national line of business, strategic input is expected and immediately visible.
