Job description

JMT Consultants Inc.

Winnipeg (In office) / Remote (Consideration for the right candidate)

Full-Time Permanent Position

JMT Consultants is a North American-based global leader specializing in steel and concrete design solutions. Services include pre-construction modeling, structural design support, steel and concrete detailing, connection and stair engineering, panel book detailing, estimate modeling, and BIM management.

Join our dynamic and rapidly expanding development team as a Software Developer - Steel Detailing! Bring strong development skills and hands-on steel-industry knowledge to build reliable software for steel detailing, engineering, fabrication, and project delivery.

Reporting to the Technical Product Manager, you will develop and maintain C#/.NET plugins, desktop applications, and integrations with web-platforms. Working with detailing and engineering experts, developers, and QA, you will translate approved requirements into accurate, production-ready software.

This is a hands-on development role covering both desktop tools and data integrations from the outset. AI-assisted coding is a core part of our workflow.

What You'll do:
  • Develop steel detailing software: Design, build, debug, and maintain C#/.NET plugins and desktop tools for Tekla Structures, applying your steel-industry knowledge to deliver reliable, practical functionality.
  • Implement approved engineering rules: Translate rules established or approved by engineering specialists into connection-selection, design, and plugin logic. Verify implementation against those rules and refer engineering decisions back to the experts.
  • Translate detailing requirements into precise behaviour: Define geometry, tolerances, and edge cases for coped or shallow beams, sloped or skewed members, mismatched depths, and column-web versus flange framing.
  • Build desktop-to-web integrations: Develop and maintain the pipelines that exchange model and project information between desktop engineering and detailing tools and our web platform, preserving accuracy in both directions.
  • Maintain reliable data mappings: Preserve identifiers, marks, profiles, assemblies, capacities, geometry, and statuses as information moves between models, drawings, revisions, RFIs, package data, and viewer exports.
  • Use AI-assisted development effectively: Apply AI coding tools throughout development while critically reviewing generated code, testing its behaviour, and maintaining responsibility for software quality and domain accuracy.
  • Verify software against real models: Check plugin output and integrations against approved rules, applicable standards, and fabrication and erection practice. Confirm geometry, clearances, tolerances, and data accuracy before release.
  • Partner with QA: Document expected behaviour, tolerances, edge cases, and data contracts in consultation with engineering specialists. Support automated and regression tests that protect correctness as the software evolves.
  • Resolve issues at the right layer: Reproduce support issues, distinguish software defects from modelling or configuration problems, and identify whether corrections belong in a plugin, integration, or web application.
  • Deliver maintainable solutions: Work with the Technical Product Manager, developers, and platform engineers to implement features and fixes, document behaviour, and support software builds, packaging, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
What Makes You Stand out:
  • Experience developing plugins and automation with the Tekla Open API.
  • A strong understanding of structural engineering and connection design is a significant asset.
  • Knowledge of AISC 360, applicable OSHA erection requirements, and the practical path from design through detailing, fabrication, and erection.
  • A detailer's eye for the geometry, clearances, and fine tolerances that make a part buildable, combined with disciplined software problem-solving.
  • Experience integrating desktop detailing and engineering applications with web platforms, including reliable exchange of model and project data.
  • Familiarity with version control, CI/CD, and software build, packaging, and deployment processes.
  • Experience across multiple modelling platforms, including Revit, and the ability to translate industry requirements into clear technical rules and test cases.
Requirements:
  • Five or more years of professional software development experience, with strong C#/.NET skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Five or more years of steel detailing and/or fabrication experience, with practical knowledge of steel members, connections, assemblies, and erection.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Tekla Structures or SDS2.
  • Hands-on professional experience with AI-assisted coding tools, including critical code review, testing, and responsibility for the resulting code.
  • The ability to develop and maintain data pipelines and integrations, including extraction logic, data mappings, and reliable exchange between systems.
  • The ability to validate geometry, connection behaviour, and data accuracy, and distinguish software defects from modelling or configuration issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to document technical rules, expected behaviour, tolerances, and data mappings.
  • A relevant degree, diploma, or certificate in software development, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
