Job description

Google is looking for PhD Software Developer Interns to join their team across Waterloo, ON, Montreal, QC, and Toronto, ON for Summer 2027. This is a paid 12–12 week internship designed for students in the penultimate year of their PhD program in Computer Science or a related technical field.

This internship offers personal and professional development, an executive speaker series, and community-building opportunities. Interns work on critical software development projects, contribute to scalable distributed systems, and gain exposure to cutting-edge research in AI, machine learning, and systems design.

Responsibilities

• Create and support a productive and innovative team, including working with peers, managers, and teams.
• Develop scripts to automate routine tasks.
• Apply knowledge gained in computer science courses to real world issues.
• Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution to effectively solve problems.
• Design, test, deploy and maintain software solutions (Software Developer track).
• Troubleshoot traffic anomalies, maintain services, and build automation infrastructure (Site Reliability track).

Minimum Qualifications

• Pursuing a PhD program with a focus on subjects in software development or other technical related fields.
• Experience coding in one of the following programming languages including but not limited to: C, C++, Java, or Python.

Preferred Qualifications

• Currently attending a degree program in Canada and available to work full time for 12 weeks outside of university term time.
• Penultimate academic year or returning to a degree program after completion of the internship.
• Experience conducting research in algorithms, architecture, artificial intelligence, compilers, database, data mining, distributed systems, machine learning, networking, or systems.
• Experience in computer science, data structures, algorithms, and software design.

Participation in the internship program requires that you are located in Canada for the duration of the internship. English proficiency is a requirement for this internship program.
