Reports to : Manager of Mental Health & Addictions Program

Status : Full-Time Term

The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Social Worker.

The Organization

Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) is the leading health care provider on the western James Bay coast. WAHA comprises of hospitals in Moose Factory, Fort Albany, and Attawapiskat, with a Health Centre in Moosonee. WAHA also provides regional outpatient programs, as well as Paramedicine services in Moose Factory, Moosonee, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Attawapiskat, and Peawanuck. The span of services, complexity of care needs in the region, and the depth of health integration has made WAHA a leader and a model of health care services in Northern Ontario. WAHA consists of 450 employees, a Physician team, many students, as well as community stakeholders. It is affiliated with Queens University and offers many educational opportunities for current and prospective team members.

Position Profile Requirements :

  • Knowledge of the Mental Health and Addictions Legislations
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Motivated professional who can work with minimal supervision
  • Strong knowledge of practice and regulations

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide culturally appropriate mental health services to the population within WAHA’s catchment area
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to advance objectives of the organization
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge of practice and regulations according to the Mental Health Act
  • Advanced knowledge and practice skill concerning crisis intervention, risk management, and psychiatric assessments. Knowledge and skills in critical Incident Stress Debriefing
  • Provide personal support and initiatives

Qualifications / Experience :

  • Degree in social work is required
  • Three (3) years’ recent related experience in a crisis or emergency psychiatry setting or three (3) years recent in acute psychiatry
  • Must be in good standing as a Registered Social Worker with the College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers
  • Must possess and maintain CPR certification
  • Reliable and cooperative, effective interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to communicate in the local Cree language is an asset
  • Willingness to travel within the region is required
