Job description

The Underwriting Team is looking for an analytical, self‑starter to join the unit as an Underwriter. Reporting to the Small Business Underwriting Manager, the Underwriter position is accountable for analyzing group characteristics, benefits and plan design in order to appropriately price and win new group business or retain existing business.

This role will involve analyzing the rating information, assessing the group’s specific risk characteristics as well as delivering clear, accurate and complete quotes to our Manulife Account Executives.

Position Responsibilities
  • Analyze group characteristics, benefits, and plan designs
  • Analyze premium and claims information in order to appropriately price small business
  • Provide underwriting decisions through clear verbal and written communications
  • Conduct constructive negotiations utilizing underwriting judgment and guidelines
  • Evaluate and act on risk propositions.
  • Accurately price new and existing business opportunities.
  • Provide value added underwriting and benefit recommendations to maximize the clients' group benefit spend
Required Qualifications
  • Negotiation Skills: Skilled in influencing and negotiating positive outcomes. Strong customer service skills with the ability to negotiate with the Advisors, Account Executives and Head office partners
  • Ability to prioritize high volumes of work and multiple priorities within set time constraints
  • Ability to meet and work within timely deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Solid mathematical skills for data analysis and decision-making
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Fosters productive working relationships across diverse groups to produce superior solutions
  • Stays current on Manulife’s strategy, key priorities and market trends
  • Execute with excellence and a commitment to high quality
  • Flexible hours to meet the needs of our customers across the country
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Group Life and Health concepts, benefits and products
  • Previous underwriting experience is an asset, as is enrollment in or completion of GBA, LOMA, HIAA, or CEBS.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of GB tools and systems an asset
  • Fully bilingual (French/English): The successful candidate will be required to communicate in English and French in order to support clients from various jurisdictions outside of Quebec.

Salary range is expected to be between

$51,375.00 CAD - $85,625.00 CAD. If you are applying for this role outside of the primary location, please contact recruitment@manulife.com for the salary range for your location. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job‑related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
