Job summary

Northback is seeking a Site Safety Manager to lead day-to-day health, safety and security on-site in the Crowsnest Pass region of Alberta. The role oversees access control, land management, and contractor budgets while guiding the safety culture during a pivotal project phase.

Reporting to the VP Technical Services, you will manage the Safety & Health Management System, incident investigations, training, and emergency planning. A pre-employment drug test is required.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline.
• 10+ years of safety-related work experience in heavy construction/mining industries.
• Experience managing site safety activities for construction projects, mining sites, or other large infrastructure projects.
• Experience developing and continuously improving safety and health systems and workplace safety culture.
• Advanced understanding of Alberta’s Occupational Health & Safety legislation and mine safety requirements.
• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Concur, SAP, safety software).
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
• Ability to lift up to 25 kg, hike, enter/exit equipment, and work at heights.
• Comfortable working in various environmental conditions and rough terrain for extended periods.
• Strong schedule management and the ability to meet critical deadlines.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and decisive action in high-stress situations.
• Strong attention to detail in maintaining site records.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking.

Responsibilities

• Leading day-to-day operations of safety and security.
• Maintaining and improving the site Emergency Response Plan, corporate Emergency Management Plan, and Crisis Management Plan.
• Administering incident investigation process and maintaining training.
• Managing continuous improvement of the Safety & Health Management System.
• Supporting other functions in maintaining health, safety, and security in the workplace (site tours, events).
• Administering the Access Management Plan and acting as site contact for land inquiries (external inquiries referred to Manager Community Relations).
• Maintaining compliance with Road Use Agreements, Access Agreements, and Grazing Leases.
• Monitoring and maintaining compliance with LOCs, RTFs, etc.
• Managing budget, schedule, and quality of third-party contractors including medical services and security.
• Overseeing road maintenance and construction to maintain safe site access.
• Completing monthly accruals, KPI reporting, and budget forecasting.
• Maintaining and inspecting mobile assets including vehicles, communications, roads, and fences.

Northback is a Canadian company focused on the development of the Grassy Mountain steelmaking coal project in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

We are seeking a diligent Site Safety Manager to join our team in our Crowsnest Pass office. This role offers an exciting opportunity to help shape a safety-first culture at an important stage of project development.

Reporting to the Vice President Technical Services, the Site Safety Manager will be primarily accountable for overseeing site safety, access control, security, land and tenure management, and will have temporary responsibility for mobile asset maintenance. This role will supervise members of the health, safety, and security team and will be responsible for managing contractors and budgets related to work in these areas.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Health, Safety, and Security

• Leading day-to-day operations of safety and security
• Maintaining and continuously improving thesite Emergency Response Plan, corporate Emergency Management Plan, and Crisis Management Plan
• Administering Northback's incident investigation process and maintaining relevant training
• Managing the continuous improvement of the Safety & Health Management System
• Supporting other business functions in maintaining health, safety, and security in the workplace (site tours, special events, etc.)

Site Management

• Administering the Access Management Plan and acting as the site point of contact for land-related inquiries fromstakeholders, agencies, and the public, with external inquiries first referred to the Manager Community Relations for disposition
• Maintaining compliance with Road Use Agreements, Access Agreements, and Grazing Leases
• Monitoring and maintaining compliance with permanent and temporary land dispositions (LOCs, RTFs, etc.)

Project and Asset Management

• Management of budget, schedule, and quality of third-party contractors including industrial medical services, and security
• Managing road maintenance and construction projects for the purpose of maintaining safe site access
• Completing monthly accruals, business reports, Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting, and budget forecasting
• Maintaining and inspecting mobile assets including vehicles, communication systems, roads and fences

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Diploma or Certificate Program in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline (equivalent combination of education and mining or construction safety experience also considered)
• 10+ years of safety-related work experience in the heavy construction and/or mining industries
• Demonstrated experience managing site safety activities for construction projects, mining sites, or other large infrastructure projects
• Demonstrated experience developing and continuously improving safety and health systems and workplace safety culture
• Advanced understanding of Alberta’s Occupational Health & Safety legislation, including knowledge of Alberta’s mine safety legislation, and ability to interpret and apply legislative requirements to complex work environments
• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Concur, SAP, and safety software)
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
• Capable of multiple physical demands including lifting (up to 25 kg), hiking, entering and exiting equipment, and working at heights
• Comfortable working in various environmental conditions, inclement weather, and rough terrain for extended periods of time
• Strong schedule management skills with the ability to navigate conflicting priorities and deliver on critical deadlines
• Demonstrated strength in critical thinking and decisive action in high stress situations

LOCATION

Crowsnest Pass is a mountain community located two hours south of Calgary, Alberta. The area has a population of 6,100 and offers numerous services, including a 24-hour emergency, acute, and continuing care hospital, schools from kindergarten to grade 12, a sports complex, a championship golf course, major banks/credit union, restaurants, and supermarkets. Crowsnest Pass is famous for its spectacular mountain vistas and is a favourite destination for downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, caving, fly fishing and hunting.
