Job summary

The City of Victoria is seeking a skilled Sign Shop Maintenance Worker to perform sign fabrication, layout, installation, and related duties within the Engineering & Public Works department.

The role requires experience with sign making, tool use, and operating equipment such as aerial lifts. A valid IMSA Level 1 certificate, a High School diploma, and a BC Class 5 licence are required. Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week, with outdoor work in all weather.

Qualifications

  • High School graduation and IMSA Level 1 Certificate.
  • Current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.
  • 1 year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out and produce lettering and graphic images for signs, vehicle markings, anti-graffiti wraps, stencils, and decals using computerized sign making equipment; transfer to substrates such as vinyl banner, glass, metals, plastics, or vinyl sheeting to produce finished signs.
  • Follow the Uniform Traffic Control Manual guidelines in the layout and production of regulatory, warning guide and temporary construction signs.
  • Apply fleet markings or wraps on City vehicles or property, install signs inside/outside City buildings, and apply vinyl glass frosting on City buildings.
  • Install and repair signs such as regulatory, street name, hazard and traffic; mix and place concrete for installation of sign posts; operate equipment such as hammer drill, post straightener, coring machine and various hand tools.
  • Replace overhead signs by use of aerial lift truck as assigned.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.

This competition may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies within this department, in accordance with the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement. The list will remain in effect for up to six months.

POSITION FUNCTION

Perform a variety of sign fabrication functions for the City of Victoria.

KEY DUTIES

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Organize and prioritize work.

Understand and apply the techniques of sign layout, fabrication and installation.

Working level knowledge of sign-making specialty software.

Operate various hand and power tools.

Produce signs and layouts using manual and computer aided sign making equipment.

Operate aerial lift truck.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.

Work and operate equipment safely.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High School Graduation.

IMSA Level 1 Certificate. (16 hours)

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
