The School of Construction and Building Sciences is currently recruiting a full‑time Shop Technician (Educational Laboratory Technologist) to join the Construction Technician Centre. This role is essential in supporting instructional staff and students by maintaining equipment, ensuring supplies are available, and preparing lab and shop environments for effective hands‑on learning.

As part of the Construction Tech team, reporting to the Tech Team Supervisor, key responsibilities include preparing lab exercises, setting up instructional materials, maintaining equipment, supporting shipping and receiving, and demonstrating safe equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lab / Shop Operations
    • Maintain and repair lab/shop equipment.
    • Ensure lab/shop environments are safe, secure, and organized.
    • Manufacture specialized items as needed to support instruction.
    • Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records.
    • Collaborate with other programs or departments as required.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Inventory Management
    • Monitor and maintain inventory of equipment, tools, and consumables.
    • Catalogue equipment manuals and technical documentation.
  • Instructional Support
    • Prepare, set up, and dismantle lab/shop exercises.
    • Assist with or conduct equipment demonstrations under instructor supervision.
    • Maintain working knowledge of equipment use and applications.
    • Support instructional staff in ensuring safe and effective use of equipment during lab/shop activities.
  • Student Support
    • Ensure students are working safely and effectively in lab/shop environments.
Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications and digital tools.
  • Skilled in operating a wide range of tools and equipment.
  • Motivated self‑started who can work independently or as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Capable of identifying required materials and estimating project costs.
  • Physically able to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Flexible and adaptable to varying work hours and assignments, including occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Qualifications
  • Completion of grade twelve.
  • Journeyperson Certificate or Technical Diploma in a related field.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services, International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or Comparative Education Services (CES).
  • Proven wood working experience is an asset.
Remuneration

$51,138.62 - $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package (Classification – Educational Laboratory Technologist II).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
