Job summary

The Mustard Seed in Kamloops, BC is seeking a West End Shelters Supervisor to lead shelter teams across our sites. You will supervise daily operations, collaborate with volunteers and external agencies, and ensure access to vital services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The role requires proven leadership in the social sector, with emphasis on empathy, relationship-building, and adherence to our mission and values. Schedule is Tue-Sat 4:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m., full-time, on-site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, Human Services, or a related field is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in mental health, addictions or homelessness is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 driver license, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean drivers abstract and 2 million liability insurance.

  • Lead the emergency extreme weather shelters team and oversee daily tasks.

Description

The West End Shelters Supervisor, reporting to the Shelter Manager, provides supervision to shelter teams across our temporary and emergency winter shelter sites. The primary objective is to ensure individuals facing homelessness and poverty have access to vital services at various shelter locations. This role demands an experienced leader in the social sector, characterized by humility, the ability to build positive relationships, and a commitment to excellence in their work. This role entails close collaboration with other Mustard Seed program areas, volunteers, partners, and external agencies to fulfill the mission and values of our shelters.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster a positive and supportive team environment, leading by example in embodying our organization's values.
  • Provide strong leadership to the emergency extreme weather shelters team, overseeing daily tasks and responsibilities of support staff, while inspiring trust and cooperation among team members.
  • Recognize the significance of building trusted relationships with the community members accessing our programs and services. Emphasize the importance of empathetic and respectful interactions with our guests.
  • Ensure that the shelter team maintains an enhanced visible presence across the property to optimize safety and create a sense of community among our guests.
  • Prioritize and provide effective solutions to staff concerns and guest issues, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment.
  • Ensure that clients' records and information are kept confidential, updated, and secure, in compliance with organizational policies and regulations.
  • Provide spiritual oversight and support to the Shelter team, facilitating regular devotionals to promote staff well-being and resilience.
  • Develop and execute housing first programming that engages our guests, offering fellowship, hope, and opportunities for personal growth.
  • Offer regular feedback to team members, conduct monthly one-on-one meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and professional development opportunities.
  • Train, supervise, and schedule shelter team members, nurturing their growth and ensuring their adherence to organizational values and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager to create and implement innovative policies, procedures, schedules, reports, and budgets for the shelter's efficient functioning.
  • Liaise with the Health and Safety Analyst to implement and promote The Mustard Seed's Health and Safety policies to ensure a safe environment for all.
  • Cultivate positive and trusting relationships both within the organization and with external stakeholders to enhance community partnerships.
  • Facilitate and attend all mandatory meetings and activities to stay informed and engaged in the organization's growth and initiatives.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A passion to be part of ending homelessness and poverty in Canada.
  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, Human Services, or a related field is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in mental health, addictions or homelessness is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with members of a multidisciplinary team and community agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in a not-for-profit or social enterprise environment.
  • Experience in strategic planning, program evaluation, and program development
  • Experience with BC Housing’s Coordinated Access, VAT, and HIFIS systems is considered an asset.
  • Superior organizational, time management and advocacy skills
  • Possess strong initiative and good decision-making skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Valid Class 5 driver license, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean drivers abstract and 2 million liability insurance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • May require time on evenings and weekends, dependent on emergency situations that arise.
  • Communicating frequently with our shelter partners for operational updates.
  • This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs, name-calling, and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
  • The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests.
  • This position is often fast-paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve.
  • This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution, work directly with clients at risk.
  • This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications; MS Office based computer programming, as well as the CCMS database system, FDARP, FOIPPA, First aid, NVCI, and SafeTALK
  • This position may be required to work out of other TMS locations based on the needs and direction of TMS.
