Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence (SDVS) Nurse Examiner
Description
The Registered Nurse is a specially trained nurse that provides trauma-informed medical and forensic care. They provide referrals for acute and follow up care to pediatric and adult victims of sexual assault/sexual abuse and domestic and child maltreatment.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to calls
- Assist with triage clients to determine if any necessary medical treatment is needed before forensic exam
- Conduct client health and assault histories
- Perform medical-forensic exams
- Proper collection of forensic photographs and other evidence
- Provide risk assessment and safety planning
- Maintain a chain of evidence
- Consult with NTHC primary care Practitioners
- Provide clients with health teaching and client care
- Testify in legal proceedings relating to SDVS client care
- Use a trauma-informed approach when caring for victims/survivors
- Attend staff meetings, professional development opportunities, NTHC gatherings and wellness days
- Access confidential debriefing services
- Participate in community and organizational events relating to raising awareness/education regarding the SDVS
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education, Designations, and Experience
- In current good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current CPR required
- SDVS community-based NE training will be provided upon hire
- Previous SANE/NE experience is a strong asset
- Three (3) years of experience in the community, women’s health, or acute care preferred
- Experience in forensic or emergency nursing, mental health, women’s health, pediatric healthcare, sexual health, crisis response, counseling, or trauma- informed care, is an asset
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system is an asset
- Experience with performing external and internal genital examinations
Skill Requirements
- Ability to observe and make effective assessments and plan interventions of clinical and forensic issues relating to SDVS
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal relationship-building skills.
- Ability to be work independently
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team with SDVS partners, and community partners.
- Effective time management skills
- Use of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Meditech/Telus PS Suite /Replicon
