Job summary

Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is seeking a part-time Linen/Mending Attendant to support the laundry and repair workflow. You will move items between areas, inspect linen for repair, and use sewing tools to mend and maintain supplies.

Team collaboration and adherence to safety protocols are essential. Qualified applicants will have Grade 12 or equivalent, ability to operate a sewing machine, and capacity to handle physical tasks in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Transfer mending buckets from clean linen area to mending area.
• Inspect all pieces of linen and sort for repair or replacement.
• Record all items discarded on standard form.
• Repair items with minor damage using sewing machines, patching machine, or other means.
• Return all repaired linen to the wash side for processing.
• Alert the manager when linen damage appears to be increasing and corrective action is needed.
• Manufacture certain linen items in consultation with the manager.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance on the sewing machines.

Job description

NOTE: Example of shift times are 6am-2pm, 6am-11am, 11am-4pm, 8am-4pm, 7am-3pm. You would need to be available as a part time staff member to work all required times. Please take these shift times into consideration when applying for the position

DUTIES:

• Transfer mending buckets from clean linen area to mending area.
• Inspect all pieces of linen and sort for repair or replacement.
• Record all items discarded (or ragged out) on standard form.
• Repair items with minor damage using the sewing machines, patching machine, or other means.
• Return all repaired linen to the wash side for processing.
• Alert the manager when linen damage appears to be increasing at an unusual rate so corrective action, if possible, can be taken.
• Manufacture certain linen items in consultation with the manager.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance on the sewing machines. Advise the manager when complete servicing is necessary (approximately once annually).
• Maintain the supplies necessary to perform the repair function. Advise the manager when repair supplies are needed.
• Maintain the mending area in clean, tidy condition.
• Assist with laundry help functions depending on workload
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Meet physical demands of the job, including extended standing, walking, lifting and climbing using proper technique.
• Ability to operate a sewing machine

EXPERIENCE:

• Sewing / mending experience required.

• Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
