Job summary

WSP in Western Canada is seeking a Senior Water Resources Engineer to lead mine water and surface water projects, from planning to construction support. You will advise clients, mentor engineers, and help grow WSP's mining water practice across Alberta and British Columbia.

The role requires a strong background in hydrology, hydraulics, and water infrastructure design, with a track record of senior technical leadership and regulator engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer registration in at least one Canadian province (multi-province registration is an asset).
  • Typical 10+ years of consulting experience in water resources engineering with mining exposure.
  • Demonstrated leadership on complex mine water and surface water projects.
  • Advanced expertise in hydrology, hydraulics, mine water management, and surface water infrastructure design.
  • Experience with mining clients and regulators as a senior technical advisor.
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, GoldSim or similar.
  • Strong technical judgement and mentoring capability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex mine water and surface water projects from conceptual planning through detailed design and construction support.
  • Develop and review site-wide mine water management strategies, including water balances and climate resilience considerations.
  • Deliver hydrologic and hydraulic assessments supporting mine operations, infrastructure, and closure planning.
  • Design and oversee surface water conveyance and control infrastructure such as channels, culverts, diversions, spillways, and ponds.
  • Integrate mine infrastructure, tailings, and water management systems into cohesive, defensible solutions.
  • Provide senior technical oversight and serve as a Qualified Professional (QP) where applicable.
  • Build trusted client relationships and contribute to proposals, pursuits, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and strengthen technical standards, best practices, and safety culture across the team.

Step into a senior technical leadership role delivering complex mine water and surface water projects across Western Canada. As a Senior Water Resources Engineer within our Mine Water & Environment – West team, you will play a critical role in shaping project outcomes, advising clients, mentoring engineers, and contributing to the continued growth of WSP's mining water practice.

This opportunity is suited to highly experienced water resources professionals, with the final scope and title aligned to your experience, technical authority, leadership influence, and market impact. The role offers flexible location options across Alberta and British Columbia.

Your Impact

Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $147,500 - $195,400

MB & ON: $134,600 - $184,600

NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $133,200 - $176,900
