Job description

The Company

Torn Banner Studios is a Toronto, Canada-based independent game development studio founded in 2010. We first made our mark with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, a multi-million copy selling title that redefined melee combat in gaming. Since then, we’ve continued to grow and innovate, releasing Chivalry 2 and, most recently, No More Room in Hell 2. Today, our team of around 100 developers is dedicated to creating fun, cinematic and social gaming experiences.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Technical Level Designer to join our team and help bridge the gap between Level Design and Engineering on a multiplayer game project.

In this role, you will own the technical implementation and architecture in Unreal 5 of gameplay-focused level actors and Blueprints, ensuring they are robust, scalable, maintainable, and aligned with multiplayer best practices. You will work closely with Level Designers and the Code team to translate design requirements into effective technical solutions and will help establish best practices and technical standards for a new project.

This is a senior level role with strong technical ownership. You should be comfortable navigating the world of code, understanding technical concepts, familiar with scripting in languages like Python, Javascript or C#, and making informed technical decisions within your area of expertise.

Note: While this role can be carried out remotely, candidates are required to be current Ontario or Quebec residents or willing to relocate to Ontario.

Responsibilities
  • Own the Blueprints and technical actors used by Level Design, ensuring they are well-structured, maintainable, performant, and easy for designers to use.
  • Design and implement gameplay and level systems using Unreal Engine Blueprints, with a strong focus on multiplayer and network replication.
  • Take ownership of systems such as destruction actors, interactive environmental objects and other reusable level gameplay actors.
  • Establish and promote Blueprint best practices, particularly around multiplayer, replication, performance, reusability, and maintainability.
  • Review and improve existing Blueprints and actors, ensuring they remain in good technical shape as the project evolves.
  • Act as a technical bridge between Level Design and Engineering, translating design requirements into clear and effective technical solutions, tools and documentation.
  • Communicate technical constraints and requirements to Level Designers and help the team make informed implementation decisions.
  • Help define technical standards and workflows that allow Level Designers to work efficiently while maintaining a high level of technical quality.
  • Identify technical risks and blockers within Level Design and work proactively with Engineering to resolve them.
  • Contribute to the technical vision and evolution of Level Design workflows on the project.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5 Years experience working with Unreal Engine in a game development environment.
  • Strong understanding of Blueprint architecture and best practices.
  • Experience working on multiplayer games, with a solid understanding of replication and networked gameplay concepts.
  • Ability to understand technical requirements and translate them into practical Blueprint solutions.
  • Comfortable working closely with programmers and level designers navigating technical discussions.
  • Ability to read and understand script code.
  • Experience creating reusable, scalable, and maintainable gameplay or level actors.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make technical decisions within your area of ownership.
  • A proactive mindset and the confidence to establish and advocate for technical best practices.
Bonus Points
  • Basic familiarity with C++ or programming concepts.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages.
Benefits & Perks
  • 6.5 weeks paid vacation
  • Eligible for Employee Stock Options Plan
  • Flexible schedule and work location, with your choice of remote, hybrid, or on-site.
  • Healthcare & benefits plan, for you and your family
  • 100% parental leave top-up for 16 weeks, for Canadian employees.
