Who you are

You are an experienced people leader with over 5 years of experience coaching, mentoring and managing the performance of a software development team. Your leadership is built on a strong technical foundation of over 6 years as a developer with expert knowledge in Javascript and front‑end frameworks like React as well as a working knowledge of back‑end technologies like C# and relational databases such as Postgres. You are skilled in managing Agile development processes like SCRUM or Kanban and have strong project management abilities to ensure work stays on schedule. As a strategic, solutions‑focused leader you are a strong team player with an entrepreneurial mindset capable of resolving both technical and interpersonal conflicts to keep your team engaged and successful.

What you’ll do

You will provide strategic impact by leading, coaching and mentoring a team of software developers. You will direct and manage software development projects, oversee task assignments and ensure your team’s work stays on schedule while managing their performance and career development. As a technical subject‑matter expert you will lead the design and implementation of efficient and reusable code, conduct code reviews and participate in the development of prototypes and proofs of concept. You will manage the team’s Agile development process and collaborate closely with other teams and stakeholders to deliver features that span multiple products.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Direct and manage software development projects; ensure the development and implementation of efficient, clean code with an assigned team that satisfies customer requirements.
  • Align to business goals and manage the team regarding task assignments, work arrangements and other Software Development Department expectations.
  • Ensure work progress stays on schedule and update stakeholders on project status.
  • Install, manage, measure and change an Agile development process (e.g. SCRUM, Kanban).
  • Collaborate with other development teams and stakeholders/other departments on design and implementation of features spanning multiple products.
  • Execute Test‑Driven and Security‑Driven Development.
  • Conduct comprehensive testing and code reviews to ensure that code quality is maximized and best‑practice standards are followed.
  • Lead and participate in development of prototypes, minimum viable products and PoCs.
  • Appropriately document system design and architecture such that it is easy to understand, maintain and extend.
  • Oversee the activities and performance of direct reports.
  • Provide direction, coaching and mentorship to the team.
  • Resolve interpersonal and technical conflict.
  • Coach, provide timely actionable feedback and invest time in the career development of team members.
  • Actively work on retention and engagement of team members, including upskilling, development and career progression for team members.
  • Collaborate and support employees during the performance management process, meeting KPAs and career development planning.
  • Provide expert project‑leadership and guidance to the team as an SME.
  • Support Geotab global strategic initiatives.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on‑call rotating schedule.
What you’ll bring to the role
  • 6 years experience as a Software Developer using object‑oriented programming to build scalable applications.
  • 5 years of relevant people‑management experience / people leadership.
  • Expert knowledge in Javascript and front‑end frameworks/libraries (React, jQuery, ES6) and experience with UI/UX design.
  • Knowledge of advanced browser utilization techniques such as webWorkers, Service workers, localStorage, IndexedDB and interop.
  • Working knowledge of databases (e.g., MySQL, Postgres).
  • Working knowledge of multiple C# frameworks.
  • Experience with SQL Server and Postgres database design, optimisation and query writing.
  • Proficiency in Git or another distributed source‑control tool and comfort resolving merge conflicts and renaming branches, etc.
  • Experience with Python, Google Compute Engine, and Google BigQuery is a bonus.
  • Success with coaching and development of employees.
  • High accuracy and meticulous attention to detail. Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem‑solve and make well‑judged decisions.
  • Strong project‑management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions and manage projects through to completion.
  • Bachelor of Computer Science, Electrical / Software Engineering or other related degrees.
