Stantec is seeking an engineer specializing in mine tailings management to support the growth of the Tailings and Mine Waste department in Montréal. This strategic role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and a solid understanding of the Canadian mining sector. The successful candidate will lead complex technical projects (TSFs, waste rock facilities) and contribute to business development by identifying new opportunities.

Your key responsibilities
Technical Leadership and Business Development
  • Maintain active market awareness, represent Stantec at mining industry events, build long-term strategic relationships, and contribute to revenue growth.
  • Lead proposal development, manage commercial follow-up, and present technical solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Lead complex mining projects from design through execution, including tailings, waste rock, water management systems, earthworks, and dikes.
  • Act as Engineer of Record (EOR), support risk analyses, safety reviews, and site inspections, in compliance with GISTM standards and CDA and MAC guidelines.
Infrastructure Design and Management
  • Design and plan tailings storage facilities (TSFs), waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs), and water management systems, including dikes and containment structures, in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments, dam safety reviews, and inspections; analyze structural performance and recommend optimization measures.
  • Contribute to the development of closure and reclamation plans in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of technical documentation, provide support to field teams, and collaborate closely with related disciplines.
Mentorship and Talent Development
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork in identifying business opportunities and in building, mobilizing, and managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure rigorous technical review of team reports and deliverables to guarantee quality, consistency, and compliance with established standards.
Technical Deliverables and Documentation
  • Prepare and contribute to the production of comprehensive, rigorous, and high-quality engineering reports that meet technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Produce technical deliverables adapted to the various study phases (Concept, PEA, PFS, FS, and detailed engineering).
  • Draft technical memoranda, design criteria, and detailed stability analyses, ensuring clarity, consistency, and traceability of assumptions and results.
Your background
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline; a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering is considered a major asset.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in mining consulting engineering, with in-depth expertise in mine tailings management.
  • Strong experience in the design, operation, and management of tailings storage facilities (TSFs), including water management and geotechnical characterization of mining materials.
  • Active member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), with strong knowledge of GISTM standards and CDA and MAC guidelines.
Interpersonal and Professional Skills
  • Strong professional credibility with a proven ability to build lasting, trust-based client relationships and drive business growth.
  • Excellent communication skills in both French and English, with strong mentoring capabilities and proven effectiveness in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Strong critical and analytical mindset, solution-oriented, with a demonstrated ability to make sound technical decisions in a timely manner.
Your key to success
  • Direct experience in the mining or natural resources industry, including participation in mine closure and site rehabilitation projects.
  • Recognized contributions through technical publications and/or presentations at mining industry conferences.
  • Holding additional professional certifications, particularly in project management (e.g., PMP).
