Job summary

HDR in Toronto is seeking a Senior Rail Systems Integration Engineer to join our North America Rail and Transit Systems Team, working with project managers and engineers on Canada and the US projects.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in railway engineering, a PE license, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams while communicating effectively with clients within HDR’s employee-owned culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field
  • 10 years of experience in railway engineering and managing complex multidisciplinary railway projects
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license required
  • Proficient with MicroStation, OpenRail Designer/OpenRoads Designer, and/or AutoCAD and Civil3D
  • Strong technical writing and client presentation skills
  • Experience leading railway projects

Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for all aspects of client and design-team management of commuter, shortline, freight, transit and class-one rail projects
  • Coordinate the planning and environmental process; manage the assembly of plans, specifications and construction estimate packages
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization that resolves problems of greater scope and complexity while planning and developing projects or designing activities that have significant impact on major company programs
  • Be able to plan, organize and supervise work of medium to large staff of professionals and technicians
  • Serve as Project Manager on larger projects as needed; project management is not sole focus of position
  • Serve as a high-level point of contact between the client and HDR
  • Perform other duties as needed

HDR is seeking a Senior Rail Systems Integration Engineer to join our Toronto office. Reporting to the Section Lead - Systems and Operations, you will be part of the larger North America Rail and Transit Systems Team, working closely with project managers and engineering disciplines on a variety of projects in Canada and the US.

As an engineer with experience in the rail and transit field, you will support in the development and application of Systems Integration principles (such as requirements management and interface management) on projects. Working with a wide variety of engineering disciplines you will need to be creative, hands‑on, and good at problem solving, being able to look at projects from a bigger holistic systems perspective. The expectation is that this candidate will have the ability to help lead (internally and in front of the client) the management of interfaces between systems and infrastructure elements as part of the project management team. The candidate will be involved with developing and apportioning system‑wide operational and technical requirements and can collaborate between technical groups in the solution of complex integration challenges.

This position is ideal for an engineer with a broader view and understanding across multiple engineering and project disciplines (including communications, signalling, civil engineering, architecture, track, and other rail systems), as opposed to working as a specialised electrical engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • Undergraduate engineering degree in a related field (civil, mechanical, environmental, systems, industrial, mechatronics, etc.)
  • Understanding of systems integration principles such as interface management and requirements management, including experience using tools such as DOORS NG, and familiarity with ISO15288 Standard would be considered an asset
  • Experience working in large, multi-disciplinary projects
  • Self-starter, able to work independently and lead initiatives on projects2
  • Adaptable to different project environments, good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly creative, out-of-the-box approach for problem-solving
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10 years experience in railway engineering and managing complex multidisciplinary railway projects
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Proficient with MicroStation, OpenRail Designer/OpenRoads Designer, and/or AutoCAD and Civil3D
  • Skilled in technical writing, communicating and presenting to clients and the public
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team on railway projects
  • Computer literate with MS Office (Word, Excel, Project)
