Job summary

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in a related IT field.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a mining or industrial setting is an asset.
  • IT certifications in Linux, Microsoft, VMWare, or Cisco are a plus.

Role Overview

Reporting to the IT Coordinator, the Senior Systems Administrator manages and maintains our complex IT infrastructure, focusing on server/network performance, security, upgrades, and backups, while also developing best practices, handling complex troubleshooting, managing vendors, and leading IT projects to ensure system stability and efficiency. They ensure reliability, security, and optimal function of servers, networks, firewalls, storage, and virtualization.

Please note this position requires the successful incumbent to relocate to Williams Lake, BC, or the surrounding area. This is not a permanent remote working position.

Core Responsibilities
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of networks, servers, and other core systems.
  • Plans for necessary hardware or software upgrades to support system growth.
  • Maintains inventory and asset configuration documentation.
  • Establishes, monitors, and evaluates effectiveness of logging procedures to meet IT security requirements.
  • Configures and maintains remote access and underlying security provisions.
  • Maintains communications systems (VOIP, mobile phones).
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Mentors and cross‑trains team members on existing and new technologies.
Education & Experience
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Administration, or equivalent experience required.
  • 5+ years of experience in a related IT field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in a mining or industrial setting is an asset.
  • IT certifications in Linux, Microsoft, VMWare, Cisco, or other related fields are a plus.
Skills & Competencies
  • Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with multi‑domain Windows environments and server products (Azure, Exchange, SharePoint, Microsoft 365).
  • Knowledge of networking protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN.
  • Familiarity with database management systems like Microsoft SQL or MySQL.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Experience with NAS and virtual environment design and support (NetApp, VMware).
  • On‑premise and cloud‑based IP phone PBX systems.
  • Experience maintaining system security through patching, configuration, and monitoring.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Experience developing and executing disaster recovery plans for systems managed.
  • Experience writing technical documentation of systems.
  • Experience using helpdesk ticketing systems.
  • Ability to prioritise work in a large complex environment.
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as being a team player.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with staff at all levels and communicate with both technical and non‑technical people.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
